I don't think it would've been right had he married the white girl. That relationship was based on him totally neglecting his entire family, and just assuming the worst of them. It was painful to watch, though, because I don't think he gave the white girl a real chance to embrace his family and his culture either. And I do think she was open to it...

I did not feel much pressure to marry another Japanese American (or Japanese) guy, but I know of others who do/did. There is so much baggage that many kids carry to "do the right thing."

Off on a hijak-- my family originally was against my seeing DH because our cultural differences were "too big". But, after we were married for about 2 years, they started to say that HE got the short end of the stick-- in my presence no less!

I really liked this movie. I thought the roles of the father and mother were well acted.

Alison, I also liked the part where they travel to India as teens.

I haven't read the book. I am reading her older collection of short stories, Interpreter of Maladies, for my bookgroup. I would like to read The Namesake but wish I had read it before the movie. I like to imagine the characters myself and now I'll just see the people in the movie.
