Atonement

Holy heavy movie! Very, very well done. Brilliant acting. Interesting story. But heavy. Soooo heavy and dark and sad. My friend and I just sat laughing in the theater when it was over. Our other choice was Juno, but I decided I couldn't get behind a sarcastic pregnant teenager right now so we saw Atonement.

It was good. Beautiful, too. But heavy.

So, it did not border on overwrought? Just wondering because I saw the previews and the cinematography looked awesome. I want to see it. DW said you want to see that?

But my only fear is that it was going to be over-the top maudlin.

No - I wouldn't call it over-the-top maudlin. No wailing, woe-is-me, etc. Sad & heavy (heck, it's based during WWII). The cinematography is amazing. The "home" the first 1/2 of the movie is set in is just gorgeous.

The cinematography is awesome and it is sad and heavy and SAD. I read the book (mostly ) and IMO it would be hard to follow all of the movie without the book. But since I didn't see the movie before the book, I can't really say, right? Not over the top maudlin.

Just saw the movie last night.
I enjoyed it and hadn't read the book first. DH liked it too because it wasn't your "run of the mill" period piece.

The cinematography WAS amazing. The way it was filmed is just as important as the main characters. It reminded me a bit of how "Snow Falling Over Cedars" took your breath away with the music, color, and various imagery at times.

Great acting. It's a different, fresh story.

We watched it this weekend. It was good- DH liked it, too, which surprised me.

The acting was great, of course. The setting was beautiful. While the movie was sad, I thought it was appropriate.

I'd be much more likely to give this type of movie an academy award over No Country for Old Men. (I still don't get it.)
