murder by numbers

mmmm, we rented it but I thought it was kinda boring. and i don't understand the significance of the title. Does anyone out there have an idea as to why it's called "Murder by Numbers"??? To do a Siskel et al analysis: poor character development, highly improbable, blah...

Can anyone analyze the title for me?
