Well, since we don't live in an area with many frozen lakes, I don't worry about that one too much. But the story within the movie about the nest of black widows freaked me out - I always sweep out my kids beds and shoes for spiders before letting them in.

Out of curiosity, what IS the line between "movie" and "film"? I kinda know what you mean from context, but I'm curious if there's actually anything objective one can point to, or if it's just a "I know it when I see it" thing. Seems to me there's a HUGE gray area between "Dumb and Dumber" and "Lost in Translation"

We do this too everytime before going out & before putting the kids down! We have found 1 scorpion in each of their rooms and a few black widows outside but up near the house . My dad was highly allergic to bee stings, therfore there is a chance my kids could be as well and if that's the case, the bark scorpion could potentially kill them !

Back to the question w/in the thread...I too heart the Choen brothers' Movies/films as well as Wes Anderson's...but was uncertain if they qualified as Films?

          Suz...

I'm enjoying the lists. I will have to read through this list and update my Netflix queue with some of them.

Personally, I think everything the Coen bros. have done qualify as films. And yes, Barton Fink was awesome.

Lily, if you come to visit I'll cue up "Drowning Mona". Though I like movies, er films, I rarely like to watch them again. But I bought Drowning Mona b/c I thought it was so funny.

I loved Amelie and Lola rennt is awesome.

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not is a French thriller with Audrey Tautou (I wish I had eyes like hers, I wish I had eyes like hers)

I love French comedies: Tanguy (about 30-something guy whose parents do EVERYTHING to try to get him to move out. I saw it in Germany years ago, but can't find it on dvd in the States) and The Dinner Game (hilarious). I wish more movies from France would make it to the US.

Re: I need your top 5 films

Here are my favorite 5 that I can think of right now. I'm sure as soon as I hit Submit, I'll think of 5 different ones...
                - Casablanca
                - Children of Men
                - Brick
                - House of Flying Daggers
                - Once

                And my not-quite-"film" top 5:
                - Monty Python and the Holy Grail
                - Idiocracy
                - Stand By Me
                - The Lord of the Rings trilogy
                - Wizard of Oz
                Laurie
My team: DH (anesthesiologist), DS (9), DD (8)

What is the line? I have no idea but the 4 and 5 year olds did!

I think the Coen brothers manage to straddle both worlds.

Keep the suggestions flowing- and if anyone is interested, she shows the movies/films for free at Hemisphere Park every Thursday (9 months of the year) They're trying to come up with a winter (indoor) series now.

I just noticed the Commitments is already mentioned, so I'll add some more!
BTW Watership Down is so great! The book too, I read it about once a year

Here's my list (in no particular order) and it's really hard to narrow down to only 5.

                          Burnt By The Sun

                          Y tu mama tambien
