My bf and I went to see this on Valentine's day as the movie part of our dinner and a movie date.

I thought it was well done, disturbing, violent, funny, depressing, uplifting. The story is about a cast of characters (the main character and narrator, Rocket) set in City of God, Rio de Janeiro, which is the slums. It follows these characters and their lives as drug dealers, friends and Rocket's attempt to leave the slums as a photographer.

I agree that this was a great movie and very well done. It's funny to think of it as a Valentine's Day movie, though! It's just almost unbearably violent, which is all the more disturbing when they tell you it's based on a true story. I thought they did a terrific job of making the characters' lives and circumstances understandable, considering how foreign that kind of life is to most Americans.
