The Incredibles

Just went to check out the Incredibles and it was fantastic! Both BF and I thought it was the best movie we've seen in a long time. I love the whole Holly Hunter girl power thing the best. Definitely worth checking out.

I adore Sarah Vowell and really liked Finding Nemo so I'm looking forward to seeing this.

We saw this last night and we both agree with Liz's review. We thought it was even a little better than Finding Nemo, and we loved Finding Nemo.

Guys, I'm sorry, I have to disagree. We took my kids and my niece and nephew yesterday and I felt like this movie was not the same caliber as the other Pixar films (i.e. Monsters Inc, Toy Story, Nemo). Sorry to be negative, but the story line was far from original and there was a lot of gratuituous violence for a film targeted at young children. (I'm not making judgment calls here...my son watches Batman cartoons too).

I did enjoy the themes of being true to yourself, family sticking together, and equality in marriage.

But there I go....overanalyzing a freakin' Disney flick.

Thanks for the heads up on the violence. Bryn gets really scared by that -- especially in the theater. Guess we won't be taking her along!

We actually did have a little discussion about the violence in the movie on our way home. Neither one of us thought it was appropriate for small children. It started a discussion of all the things that are animated and seemingly directed at children but are really inappropriate - the Simpsons (I didn't see this until I was in college - Mom's orders), Family Guy (BF's favorite show ever), etc. Then we got into a whole debate on the G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17 thing that went way into the night. Ah, life with a man who is always, always right. Even if I'm right he finds some way to be right.

Speaking of Nemo... I was scared in Nemo and I'm 26. Then again, Disney always seems to kill off a parent.

It was violent, it's true. There was much stomping and chasing and crushing and peril. And some torture. Hmmm.

It's not just animated movies-- seems like a lot of childrens movies have a dark side, including The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka. I'm not sure why that is.

We watch Nemo on the little screen in broad daylight with an adult around. So, I think this movie is out for now!

I think that Disney et al don't understand that kids don't need quite so much drama in order to draw them into the plot. If Bambi's mama just had to sit things out for a while because of a sprained ankle....that would have created enough drama to propel the movie (for my 4 yo at least).

Now I'm holding out for Polar Express. The book isn't scary, hopefully the movie isn't either!

As a child I was scared to death by The Secret of Nimh. They tried to drop a cinderblock on Nicodemus after all! Plus the whole movie had a very dark look to it.

Thanks for the heads up, we won't be taking our 4yr old. He doesn't do well with violence either.

And with Nemo, we fast forward to the opening title scene, past the eating of the siblings and mom.

Julie, I don't even remember the monkeys. My head was probably under a blanket. Until, like, age 10.

We fast forward through the beginning of Nemo as well. Too scary and too many questions to answer!

I was afraid of the monkeys in the Wizard of Oz too. I still think they are kind of creepy. I also used to hate that part where they finally meet the Wizard and he's this big huge mean head surrounded by fire. Yikes. :>

I never thought of Nemo as scary until I read these posts. You are right, it probably would be scary to kids. I sometimes wonder how much of the plot line is for the parents rather than the kids. Some movies strike a really good balance and some don't.
