  • Napoleon Dynamite

If you REALLY need to laugh, try Napoleon Dynamite. Its an immature sort of comedy, but I was roaring. There really is no way to describe it. I see myself and so many people from my past in the character of Napoleon.

DH and I would have to respectfully disagree with you Heather! We rented this just the other day and were sorely disappointed. There were a couple of ... amusing scenes, but on the whole I either didn't get the point of the movie (seemed like just a bunch of random, odd scenes thrown together) or I just was thinking about it too much. I came away just perplexed by the whole thing, not really knowing what to think. It was just odd.

You definitely were not a nerd in high school. And that's a good thing.

Ok, upon further reflection, this may be one of those movies that grows on you with time. Our newest obsession has become quoting lines from the movie ("[Grandma] said she doesn't want you here when she gets back because you've been ruining everybody's lives and eating all our steak.") and reminiscing about the random scenes ("What about the scene where he has to feed the llama?!!") hahahahahaha A couple of DH's co-residents are equally obsessed now, and have been circulating an audio file that has practically all of the movie's dialogue condensed into 30 minutes - it is absolutely hysterical.

I've heard other people say that they hated it when they first saw it, but then appreciated it more as time went on. I guess it's one of those 'love it' or 'hate it' type of movies, so I won't say whether you should see it or not. How's that for a recommendation?

            NAPOLEON

I agree...It's kind of one of those "cult films" where people see it over and over. It grows on you.

OK, now I'm going to have to see this based on that quote alone! I often like ridiculous comedies that everybody else thinks are stupid, plus I was a nerd in high school...

DH and I saw this a few weeks ago, and it really seemed like a bunch of random scenes thrown in together. But I was laughing hysterically through most of it, wondering if stuff like that actually happens?

Every now and then, DH brings up the movie and says "That really was the weirdest movie I ever saw".

                Anyone else see this?

DW and I saw it this past weekend. She thought she was going to sleep through most of it, but I caught her laughing quite a few times. Such a strange and interesting movie - I love how it's caught a cult-like image. Everywhere you go you can hear funny quotes from the movie. GOSH! I caught you a delicious bass.

That's twice in two days that I've heard reference to Napoleon Dynamite and "Gosh". Methinks it's time to rent the movie. This is our last weekend before Surgery clerkship, so it's good timing too!

Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day. Besides, we both know that I'm training to be a cage fighter.

Jon and I watched this with a couple of good friends. We were all in agreement that this was a movie about my husband's teenage years. Seriously, it's freaky how close the main character is in personality to him and all his brothers who really did grow up in a bizarre existance. (For example, when I met Jon for the first time he was wearing a green plaid thrift-shop suit, a yellow shirt, purple tie with huge white polka-dots, red tube socks, and black combat boots and his hair was long, bleached, and permed ).

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at my husband's doppleganger, Napoleon.

                        My husband LOVED the movie.

That is great! I think the "skills" line was one of my favorites. My husband and I went around the next day (after watching the movie) talking up our "skills".
