  • Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

I just watched Rudolph w/my kids - for the first time in years. There is a whole lot of stuff I forgot:

The gay elf Ernie who wants to be a dentist
    The angry Santa
    The embarrassed parents

I'm not sure this is a nice movie! I don't care about the gay elf - it's everyone else's reactions I don't like. The "misfits" label, etc. Okay - maybe I forgot the whole plot and only remembered the song part ... it's just not the Rudolph of my childhood.

Every year in college my friends and I would gather and watch Rudolph and discuss the social implications of the film. Santa was a bigot at first. The more we drank the more in depth our analysis.

I have the soundtrack in rotation now.

It's interesting how things change when viewed as a adult.

We always miss the TV specials because they are on too late. Maybe that is not so bad?

I guess the only good news is that the kids don't view the shows through the same street-wise filters that we do. I think it's because they don't have the experience yet to interpret so many of the subtle things that we tend to...

We have a 5 dvd set of the oldies but goodies...that way they can watch them after school...and they really never get tired of them. We pulled them out at Thanksgiving and they've just poured over them again.

Isn't it weird to watch shows that you saw as a child only to be horrified as an adult.
