  • Ace of Cakes

Figured I'd start a different thread.

I've often wondered if their cakes taste good. I mean, that's an AWFUL lot of fondant and gum paste. But they claim they're awesome cakes / flavors.

I just went to their website, and their least expensive cake is $500. And I assume that is a basic, basic cake. I watched one episode where the girl was carrying a 3 tier cake that was nice, but not crazy-fancy, and she said it was $1500. That Taj Mahal cake must have cost many thousand dollars!!!!!!!!! Holy cow!

I can't imagine that their cakes really taste that good. They use a ton of fondant and rice krispies. I don't see any fillings when they stack the cakes. I often think that his cakes look too cartoony for my tastes. If you want a fairly basic cake, I definitely wouldn't go there.

The $1500 cake episode was just on. It was 4 tiers, not very big (carried by one skinny girl), had twisting roads painted on it (which I could do), and postcards printed on gum paste laid against it. If that one costs $1500 .... then most of the cakes then do must be upwards of $2000.

I don't think anyone would go there for a "basic" cake.

I know you two are amazing bakers so take my comments as an unskilled....but highly experienced "cake consumer". (I'm so proud!) Most of the very fancy cakes I've had in high end restaurants and such taste lousy.

There is a bakery in Brookline, MA that does "fancy" cakes for about 50 - 250 dollars. They serve around 12-20 or so and they taste fabulous. I always wondered how they made elaborate AND tasty cakes. I'm sure the wedding cakes were closer to the 500-1000 range. I think that would be worth it...if the cake was one of your big "dream" wedding items. I can't imagine shelling out thousands for a cake that tasted bad. I'd just expire.

I can point you to a couple very yummy bakeries in your neck of the woods Angie - should you require it.

Corbos in Little Italy makes the best cassata cake in the WORLD!

Angie, ITA. I am a cake consumer too. Wedding cake is often soooo disappointing. Pretty to look at but not at all worth the calories taste wise.

I'm a dessert fanatic. In Boston, besides Little Italy, Rosie's Bakery CANNOT be beat. They're only a little pricier than a regular cake and it's SO yummy. Their chocolate buttercream is to die for!
