  • The Onion on Honey Boo Boo

I was a bit surprised to see this in the Onion, as it's more sad than funny:

I hope I'm not being too cynical, but I'll bet this gets pretty close to the truth about reality TV.

Of course it does - look how many reality stars are a wreck now?

Usually I think the Onion is pretty hysterical, but I think someone finally realized that this is a child (and her family) that is being made fun of for profit and laughs. Don't get me wrong -- that family is out there. Still, the whole affair rubs me wrong.

Exactly. Dysfunction on display as entertainment. I'm sure the family is being well compensated, but it's still exploitation. It's disgusting to think how much money TLC and the cable providers make off this as well.

Often I think the Onion gets it more "right" than many other news sources. Couched in all their sarcasm and satire, there's a whole lot of truth. Honey Boo Boo, like any other reality TV show that exploits children (Toddlers and Tiaras, Jon & Kate, Supernanny, etc. etc.) gives me the creeps. These aren't even child actors, they're actual kids with their sad, dysfunctional childhoods on display for everyone to laugh at, all because their parents would do anything for a buck and some time in the spotlight. If Real Housewives and Bachelors and Bachelorettes want to do that to themselves, I'm not going to watch it, but it's fine. They're adults. But those poor kids--It shouldn't be allowed, I don't think we should watch it and encourage it to continue.

I spent the better part of August wondering to myself, "What the hell is a Honey Booboo?" I would overhear about it in casual conversations, but never caught enough to determine that it (she) was a person. I thought she was a dog, and I couldn't figure out why a dog would drink Red Bull.

I finally googled. I was really sorry I did that.

WTF is wrong with adults who don't think a kid is occasionally going to act up? Especially *that* kid who is expected to be "on" 24/7.

Yep, she probably is. And she probably genuinely does need a nap. I can't imagine the highs and lows she must go through in a day subsisting on go-go juice, cheese balls, and all the other junk she eats and then have the traveling and interviewing schedule that she does. Many grown adults would have a melt-down in that situation.
