  • Michael Vick

I just had to post since I'm dying over here and I've said as much as possible for the moment on Facebook

The Philadelphia Eagles just signed Michael Vick to a 2-year deal today.
    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4397938

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why the front office and coaching staff decided that the team needed another QB. All of the Eagles fans are absolutely livid. Since the news just broke in the middle of their preseason game with the Patriots, the team has not given a statement on what his role with the team will be. I'm going to stay up as late as possible to watch this post-game news conference.

I called my DD to break the news to him (they're away on vacay for the week). His automatic reaction (after WTF?) - that Vick is going to be the dog handler for the players when they are on the road. So horrible, but since the Eagles have McNabb, it is honestly what every Eagles fan is thinking right now.

I am extremely disappointed in the team right now and their decision to make this transaction hurts my conscience. Now I will have to direct all of my energies to college football. ::crossing fingers that alma mater doesn't suck this year::

      hate him.

and i know some will say, 'it was just dogs and to get over it'...but i dont agree with that.

i think the things that were done to those dogs, should be done to him. i think he is a complete worthless POS that deserves to go back to prison and rot...along with all the other animal abusers, child abusers, pedophiles, and rapists.

      stupid stupid NFL.

I don't think that will ever go over with any animal lover or dog lover, his actions were inexcusable. But this is from me, I cry at the SPCA commercials.

        Still, grrr.

Hmm, the deal makes sense given McNabb's durability issues of recent years and the similarity in playing style between him and Vick. I wonder if Vick will be able to pick up where he left off, however. He'll never be a pocket quarterback (or even a marginally skilled passer) so he'll only be effective as long as he's able to run like a HB.

The fans won't ever let him forget what he's done...just picturing the multitude of posters and stuffed animals hanging from ropes confiscated at every Eagles game...

OK- just playing devil's advocate here- he paid his dues. In this country that means that he is allowed to get a job and support himself however he chooses.

I find what he did to be abhorrent. However, he apparently has a skill set that some people are willing to pay for- you can't really begrudge a person for getting a job which includes probably the only thing he knows how to do.

and honestly, how ELSE can the ASPCA continue to get millions from him if he's not working. That guy is going to be funding animal care and educational services for the rest of his life. and that is the silver lining to all this. Thousands of animals will ultimately be saved and LOTs of animal fighters will be caught and prosecuted.

Ugh, it's disgusting! The thing is, most people with a criminal record have a hard time finding a job, this guy served 18 months and now will be given a centre stage and paid millions.
He should have thought about his "career" before he got involved in dog fighting. A crime can't be made up for by getting involved in charity.

It's a kick in the face to those of us who go through life treating all living things with respect and acting like respectable human beings in turn.

I'm no PETA advocate, in fact I think a lot of their views are too extreme and just plain illogical but what he did was just wrong and most Eagles fans do not want him playing on their team. It just worsens the reputation of this city.

                  Two things:

                  1) I can see both sides of the argument. I think the points that Jenn brings up are valid ones. The question I ask is how long and in what capacity should he pay for his crime. I don't think people are going to forget what he has done, and he will forever be connected to his crime. I hope something good comes out of all of this.

                  2) my dh needs lessons on understanding American football. How on earth does a Swede living in Ireland pick this kind of thing up, McPants?

Good point about the ASPCA funding.

My random thoughts... Sure, he has the right to work, and if the Eagles want him, they can have him. But the fans are the ones who can vote with their dollars, and if they don't want their money to go to a guy who tortured dogs, then they won't buy tickets. If they don't care, they'll buy them. It'll be interesting to see how it all works itself out...

                      1. Agreed, however if he starts winning games for the Eagles, the fans will eventually see past his previous transgressions because hating him just won't be a viable option anymore. Looking at other athletes that have committed serious crimes, this has been known to happen.

                      2. I've loved watching football ever since I was a kid. It's always been available on one cable network or other. When I taught my dad the basics of the game (at the time he had the cable network that carried NFL games so I had to watch them at his place) I just started with the basics (objectives of the game, player roles, scoring, etc) and whenever something new and less common happened (safeties, laterals, etc) I made sure to explain the rules and rationale behind it. Now he understands the game quite well so it definitely isn't impossible for foreigners to pick it up.

I'm not implying that foreigners can't pick up American football, but I've never seen it played in Europe (let alone shown there) and I think If I were to ask dh to throw a ball to me, he'd have no idea what to do. That's so cool that you've been interested in it since you were little!

Actually there used to be an NFL Europe league which some NFL teams use to nurture talent. A friend of mine ended up playing a few seasons there when he was waived by his NFL team and didn't catch on anywhere else.

Currently almost all European countries have their own leagues. Many (including Sweden's for instance) are amateur however.

..and now the thread is completely hijacked.
