The Jayhawks are playing Southern Miss, probably their hardest test so far - 11am, we're excited to see it!

Question--What does Rock Chalk Jayhawk mean? I mean, I know it's a cheer, but what is the origin?

This explains it much better then I can but it basically comes from the fact that KU is built on a hill of Limestone rock.

              ESPN.com says #16 is Oregon.

We'll take that, we're off next week then we start conference play. We really need to go into the OU game (10/24) at 6-0 so we'll see how it goes.

Beat some ACC team whose mascot is a turtle. Had to hook up our computer to our TV to watch it, but it was enjoyed by all of our guests.

USF joined the Big East a few seasons back (less than 5). We had a big win against them in 2007 and I nearly suffocated rushing the field from the student section (lesson learned). I don't remember their W-L records from each year, but they have been competitive for the conference title since they joined. It's a mystery to me, since our coach recruited heavily out of South Florida for years until our state began to believe in his program. And they have to compete with Florida, FSU, UMiami for recruits. We shall see how they do this year...

We are back in the top 10!

That Cal-Oregon game was incredible. I was all worried about playing Cal next week, but now, uh, less so.

Maryland? It's a terrapin. One of my favorite mascots.

Is the terrapin right up there with the trojan?

I was being tongue-in-cheek, lol. I think it's funny how much hype Maryland gets every year - they aren't an ACC football power just yet. I also think it's hilarious that their mascot is a turtle. I laugh when I see cars around here with "fear the turtle" bumper stickers.

Anyone else out there have a funny/weird mascot at their alma mater or at a nearby school? My grad school is an owl. They are scary to mice and other vermin, I guess...

My grade school were "Comets"...or even better, I was on a swim team once that were the "water dogs" very cute, but, um, dogs really don't swim that fast. I always wondered how we "water dogs" inspired fear in the Barracudas or Hammerheads?

Haha, sorry for not catching your sarcasm. I loved seeing those "fear the turtle" posters in the DC metro - so funny.

I think the Trojan is actually a terrible mascot, but I'm stuck with it, so I'll deal. One of my dear friends went to UC Irvine, which is the Anteaters. That one makes me laugh.

TESC - fighting geoducks (pronounced gooey-ducks). They're huge clams.

Yes, my alma mater's mascot is a filter feeder.
