  • I don't understand...

...how a school that won the Orange Bowl and the National Basketball Championship in the last three years gets left out in the cold when a conference falls apart. Nebraska leaves - fine! Let them pout and run away because they think Texas rules the Big 12. But if the Texas and all the south teams go to the Pac 10 what happens to Kansas?

This TOTALLY sucks! Its going to diminish alumni degrees and make basketball recruiting, even to a school with Kansas' history, impossible.

    Nebraska SUCKS!

Umm, welcome to my world. Mid-major conferences suck. We never get the props we deserve. I say head to the Mountain West Conference. I'd love to ditch Wyoming or UNLV, well, and BYU too because I hate them. So, is the entire conference dissolving then?

Gosh, I can't imagine. Coming from the Big 10 - it is inconceivable to change conferences. I don't really understand why a school would do it. Are they thinking that they will get more championship opportunities elsewhere?

I have to admit that it is frustrating in the Big 10 that all we are known for is running. The throwing game is just completely overlooked in favor of the SEC.

It's all about the revenue generated from television contracts. As far as I understand, it's not about parity or better competition?

I just feel like these conferences have such storied traditions and rivalries and it's all being tossed aside for more $$$.

Like Heidi, my team languishes in a mid-major. Well, the Big East is not really a mid-major in basketball, but it is in football. I wish I had an alma mater that was a part of the SEC/ACC/Big 12/Big 10/Pac 10, for the excitement of the traditions and rivalries.

Oh trust me I do understand its all about the money it still SUCKS!

Let me rephrase its all about FOOTBALL money - basketball gets you NO WHERE!

The conference hasn't dissolved yet because no one seems to really know what Texas is going to do but if the south teams go to the Pac 10 then yes the conference is gone because there is a NCAA rule that says so many teams have to have been together for x years to keep a conference title. The Big 12 won't have enough and will go away.

The Mountain West is the conference thats being thrown around, no offense to the schools in that conference but going from a BCS conference to a non-BCS would bite! Bill Self probably won't stick around if a better job offer came along and I don't know why Gill, our football coach, would either.

              SUCKS!

I'm not a sports fanatic, and don't understand sports fanaticism, but I accept that a lot of people are fans. This, though, I *really* don't understand:

                How? I'm honestly curious.

I went to the University of Washington; I know the teams are called the Huskies, and I know from growing up in Seattle with a sports-watching dad that the Huskies football team used to go to the Rose Bowl a lot when I was growing up...but I couldn't tell you what conference they're in, and I really don't see how it (whatever it is) could affect the value of my EE degree. Enlighten me?

Sandy, it probably won't for KU as much because they are part of the AAU. I guess they are basically a governing body over academics like the NCAA is for sports. My understanding is that all Pac 10 schools are members of that and will on consider schools that are members of that. But for schools that are not part of the AAU it may. I don't really understand that one as much but a lot of the talking heads are saying that.

The AAU is a pretty prestigious academic organization to be a part of - only about 60 public and private schools are a part of it in the US. The organization focuses on research issues, particularly undergrad and grad education, and its members contribute heavily to all of the research done by institutions of higher education in the country: http://www.aau.edu/default.aspx.

KU is one of the schools in the Big 12 that is a part of the AAU, as is Iowa State, Texas, Texas A&M, Colorado, Missouri, and Nebraska, which is just over half of the schools in the conference. I agree that schools who have built themselves up on their athletic prowess and don't have AAU status may hurt a little bit. But for most students, their best (and cheapest option) will be to go to a public state school - nearly all of them will look right past what athletic conference they are in and whether or not they are a part of the AAU. It's all about the dorms, student center, dining hall and rec center.

OU, OK State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Texas DO NOT belong in the Pac 10. We are no where NEAR the Pacific! What the hell? Way to go whiny Missouri and Nebraska for starting this crap. The Big 12 was fine as it is.

Good riddance! What really sucks is this will only do bad things for student athletes--their schedules are ridiculous enough without hitting up the west coast on a regular basis. I am so ridiculously mad about this!

Pac 10 WTF!!! I can't even understand this. There is one good thing, we can beat the crap out of Oregon every year. Ever since our loss that was fixed, i refuse to acknowledge them as a state.
