  • Martin Luther

I thought it would be fun to pretend to be a sort of medical Martin Luther. We could compile a list of all our grievances to nail on an imaginary door to start a Reformation of sorts.

I'll start with mine and then we can all go nutso :

    1) No major test, project, or licensing step should take place the last two weeks of June through the first two weeks of July. (Sadly, we have to spell this out because in case you haven't noticed, it isn't a barrel of monkeys to sit for one of the major exams in your life while trying to begin a new job or manage a self-financed move across the country).
    2) Residents should earn a living wage commensurate with what the free market would pay.
    3) Licensing exams should accept payment by credit card. (Here's a clue to all the brainaics in charge of these tests, coming up with $2,000 on a resident's salary necessitates a couple of minor miracles).

    Have fun!

    4) While weeding out the unfit is good, doing the Big 3 in MS3 is actually sadism. Particularly when it OB/GYN is the month preceeding it.

      Ok, I'll play

      5) For those persons who are required to take both written and oral board exams, the Boards will have the option to split up the payments, rather than one huge heart-stopping payment per section.

      6) All military medical deployments will involve the physician actually working in the field in which they've been trained. (at least every so often)

        7) Attendings do not get to be assholes just for fun.
        8) 80-hour work weeks apply to all levels of medical training and are strictly adhered to.
        9) Tuition for medical school will not be exorbitant.
        10) Residents and fellows will be paid at least double the amount they make now with yearly raises for cost of living.
        11) Health care for doctors and their families is free.

Amen to number 11. For the love of pete, they are working for hospital - why should they make a pitance and have to pay for healthcare!
