Favorite Web Sites

Jenn posted a link to http://www.idealist.org in the Education and Career section the other day--it's a site that lists socially-responsible jobs and volunteer opportunities and I thought it was WONDERFUL (Thank you, Jenn!). So I got to wondering--what are some of everyone's favorite websites that you'd like to share (other than this one, of course)? Here are 10 of mine:

http://www.engrish.com The Japanese love to plaster English words and sayings all over their products, but they don't always work in translation. A very funny site.

http://www.spiritualityhealth.com "Spiritual practices for human being."

http://www.uncommongoods.com Very unusual and artistic gifts in a variety of price ranges.

http://www.salon.com An online magazine--sometimes just liberal enough, sometimes a little too liberal. I'm a big fan of Cary Tennis' advice column.

http://www.orisinal.com A free game site with some sweet games that you wouldn't mind your younger kids playing. My favorite is "Chicken Wings" where you throw umbrellas up to falling baby chicks so they can glide gently down to the ground. I know, "Awwwwwww", but hey, aren't there enough violent games already?

http://www.roadfood.com A site that features reviews of little local eateries all over the US that are excellent and cheap (the best combination). I found Ella's Deli in Madison, WI on this site and loved it.

http://www.penzeys.com A local Wisconsin company that has some of the freshest, best spices in the world. And they ship anywhere.

http://www.copykat.com Restaurant recipes to make at home. It's where I got the recipe for Sonic limeades after moving to a state that has no Sonics. 8O

http://www.thebigproject.co.uk The news section has links to the online editions of all the British newspapers. It's where I go to get another perspective on what's going on here at home.

http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com Recaps and reviews of TV shows by some very sarcastic writers.

Most of the other websites that I visit are related to some type of project that I am trying to accomplish....and are pretty much one-time shots....I use altavista to do most of my searches..followed by google and then yahoo.....I'm not sure why.....

Well, I don't have 10 sites. But here are a few favorites:
1. Bushisms -- on slate.com -- keep up with all the, ummm...*smart* things our fearless leader has to say.
2. http://www.bestplaces.net/ -- this is a nice site if you are contemplating your ROL for the match. There are over 3,000 city profiles on this site with all sorts of statistics (schools, crime, cost of living, etc).
3. http://pub50.ezboard.com/bdermatology -- a terrific resource for anyone applying into dermatology.

This is a good thread!

Besides this site, the ones I visit most are salon.com and http://www.theonion.com (a satire site, for those who are unfamiliar).

I am laughing so hard at the Bushisms....then all of a sudden, I am utterly confused at what is trying to be said in many of them!?

Oh my gosh--I cannot stop laughing at the "Bushisms". My husband was trying to talk on the phone and I was driving him crazy with all of my laughing!
My favorite websites (aside from this one) are about medical billing, medicare, etc. This is the only website I visit for fun. I think I'll have to check out some of those links, though!

A friend who is a teacher just gave me a link to a helpful website: http://www.greatschools.net
The website has most (all?) US schools listed with demographics and testing scores for each school. I think there is detailed information for TX, WA, CA and some other states.
If you are contemplating a move to a new city or within your city, this website would be helpful if you have school aged or soon to be in school kids.
My friend cautioned me to rely on more than testing statistics but I think it is a good starting place for comparing schools.

The Onion is my absolute favorite...I check it first thing Wednesday morning (that's when it's updated once a week) so I can get a good laugh.

Any guilty pleasure sites? And no, I don't mean porn Mine is eOnline (http://www.eonline.com), I check it every Wednesday for the new Fashion Police and on Thursday's I'll read The Awful Truth (gossip about celebrities). I actually look forward to Fashion Police...how embarrasing! My other guilty pleasure is reading Savage Love (Dan Savage is a gay sex/relationship columnist and is hysterically blunt). The onion.com has a link to it...it's syndicated in papers and that's where I originally would read it. Another site I sometimes look at is http://www.thesmokinggun.com.

Oh the sites I like that aren't for entertainment are http://www.philly.com (of course!), http://www.msn.com, http://www.google.com (gotta search) and this site.
