    caution: spoilers ahead

    it's pretty cool huh?
the answer is that the symbol set changes each time. There's a finite number of solutions to the problem, so they just make all those the same symbol, but different each time, so it seems like the machine "knows"

for those math geeks among you, a two digit number is 10x + y, where x is the first digit and y the second. so subtracting the sum of the two digits yields 10x+y-x-y, which is 9x, where x is between 1 and 9. So all you have to do is make every multiple of 9 between 9 and 81 the same symbol. If you check, I think 9, 18, 27, ......, 81 are all the same.

    Sorry to ruin the mystery

? If you pick 96, the total of the two numbers is 15, it never comes up with that symbol?! I hvae clicked on if over and over for about 5 minutes, just to see if it would get that symbol!!

I guess it just goes to show that my mind is a huge mess and needs to be cleaned in order to be read!

Are you subtracting 15 from 96 and therefore looking at the symbol for 81? I.e. did you skip the last step?

Thanks for making me look at it again! Just didn't comprehend the instructions.
