I almost disowned DD1 when she told me that Soundgarden was "classic rock" and that Pearl Jam "wasn't really grunge".

    :thud:

    I have officially failed parenting.

We have the ABCs of Rock and Roll for DD - I'll have to share some gems later!

Another one: when "they don't make things like they used to" (movies, music, clothes, etc).

-you do not understand the return to popularity of blue eye shadow. You were there the first time, and you fully realize the wrongness of the idea.

-the parents in the neighborhood who are ten years your junior think you are strict because your children say "Yes, Sir" and "No, ma'am"

-all you think when you see Lady Gaga is: "Madonna re-tread". With considerably less talent.

It is likely you will pull a muscle playing tag in the back yard after dinner.

You only recognize songs on the radio during "Old School Lunch."

You remember every moment when September 11th happened, where you were, what you said, who you were with.

While watching the Olympics you were happy to see past moments which featured Carl Lewis and Mary Lou Retton because you remember the kid you were then while watching with YOUR kids now. I personally think Mary Lou could kick Gabby D's butt.

Eye cream at night is required.

You remember only seeing movies in the theater.

A "smart phone" was something that George Lucas was working on for one of his Star Wars films.

You need subtitles while watching TV to fully understand the dialogue.

Your middle schooler is shocked to know texting didn't exist when you were in mid/high school.

You fear things you didn't used to because of the real threat of physical injury.

When fashion statements have come full circle. While clothes shopping with my DD's, I realize some of the things being sold look almost exactly like some of the horrid 80's/early 90's clothing I'm wearing in my childhood photos.

While cleaning out my parent's attic last weekend, we came across bags of clothes from the 80's and realized that some of them are still completely wearable - they will be going to my nieces to school clothes this fall.

You think boys wear their hair too long and their music is noise.

You're shocked to realize Debbie Gibson just turned 42 years old.
You come across toys from your childhood at the local antiques store.
Most of the rides at the county fair now make you want to vomit.

Or when the Challenger exploded. Or when the Iranian hostages were released. Or Colonel Oliver North testifying in the Iran-Contra Scandal. Or the bombing of the US Embassy in Beiruit. Or when Reagan was shot. Or when Clinton wagged his "that woman" finger. Or the Achille Laurel. Or when the Berlin Wall fell. Or Tinanamen Square.

Maybe my parents were weird news junkies (which I do not remember being the case), but I remember all these moments clearly and I remember at the time recognizing, as best a child can, that the world changed somehow that day.

These late 20th century moments that your children think are "the olden times."

My only shock about Debbie Gibson's age is that she's that young, because that means she was REALLY young when she was really big and I was listening to her stuff. Is that what you both meant by that?

Your nightstand has both excedrin and icy hot for easy access

When you do have a babysitter, you still get home early because sleep is far more intriguing than anything outside of the house
In my dreams I run with the Kenyans.

Hah, DH likes to make dinner reservations for 5pm. I usually make him push it to 6 because we're not 80 yet, for crying out loud! I don't need to order off the early bird menu and be in bed by 7, thankyouverymuch. That said, we're home by 8:30 at the latest on a date night.

She was 16 when she hit it big in 1987, and was already kind of a "has been" by her early 20s... so it's surprising to me that she's already 42 and I feel old. Well, not old. I'm in my 30s. But my doctor (not my partner ) likes to tease me that I'm "young middle-aged," because she used to refer to people who were 40-60 as "middle-aged," until a patient pointed out to her that she'd then be expecting people to live to be 120. That's funny.
