  • Medicine: The Musical

Since there hasn't been a lot of chatter lately, I thought that we could have some fun poking fun at that medicine machine that we know and love.

Residency is perfect fodder for a campy musical. Here are some of my suggestions for songs to add to the score:

Rage Against the Machine: "And now you do what they told you..."
Pink Floyd: "...all and all, you're just another brick in the wall..."
Annie: "...instead of kisses we get kicks..."

    Keep 'em coming!

Nine Inch Nails: Head Like a Hole (I'm thinking of the first two lines specifically)

Oh, and Wierd Al's "Like A Surgeon" for a scene of med students starting their clinical rotations.

And this part of Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime"
    And you may ask yourself
    What is that beautiful house?
    And you may ask yourself
    Where does that highway go?
    And you may ask yourself
    Am I right?...Am I wrong?
    And you may tell yourself
    MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

      REM:

"It's the end of the world as we know it,
      and I feel fine."

Denial is ONLY way to get through sometimes.

How morphing "40" and "Bloody Sunday" by U2 and changing it some for the "how long" refrain to apply to training?

Ooooh, I think "Head Like A Hole" is a good one for this!

God money I’ll do anything for you.
God money just tell me what you want me to.
God money nail me up against the wall.
God money don’t want everything he wants it all.

How about "Big Pimpin'" by Jay-Z? My husband used that in the senior film he made for med school (he changed the lyrics a bit to fit medical school and eliminated the profanity).

Foo Fighters "The Best of You"
'I’ve got another confession to make
                I’m your fool
Everyone’s got their chains to break
Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
                The life, the love
                You die to heal
                The hope that starts
                The broken hearts
                You trust, you must
                Confess
                ....
I’ve got another confession my friend
                I’m no fool
I’m getting tired of starting again
                Somewhere new...
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?'

There were many days, in the past training years, that this song fit my life, even though it was just released this year!

Ok...so it is not the 'feel-good' music but it hits home.

Or for the days when you are trying to hold a conversation with that sleeping student/resident/attending-
Nazareth's- "Love Hurts"or you could replace it with Cheap Trick "Want You to Want Me"

or, for the "limited" times when there is a long weekend, or perhaps a lab or research time and you have really reconnected-
Bad Company's- "Can't Get Enough of Your Love"

or for those crossing the lines with every test/month...Boston's "Don't Look Back"...'I can see that it took so long just to realize, that I am much to strong not to compromise....I finally see the dawn arising'
                  or Led Zepplin's "Ramble On"

                      Good ones, Matt!

I keep trying to think of a way to work in Bon Jovi's "Bad Medicine".

for the other bad days- Violent Femmes- "Kiss Off"

or you could come here and sing Garth Brooks "Friends in Low Places" for commisseration.

or some David Allen Coe's "Rodeo Song"...that will nearly always lift a spirit!

I was thinking of that as it relates to the ER patient population.

Here are the lyrics to my fellowship theme song from Cake:

I need your arms around me,
I need to feel your touch,
I need your understanding, I need your love,
                              So much,

You tell me that you love me so,
You tell me that you care,
But when I need you, (BABY)
                              Baby, (You're never there),

                              On the phone,
                              Long long distance,
                              Always through such,
                              Strong resistance,

                              When first you say,
                              You're too busy,
                              I wonder if you,
                              Even miss me,

                              Never there,
                              You're never there,
                              You're never, ever,
                              Ever ever there
                              Awake is the new sleep!
