  • Happy Day!

My little guy is two today! I honestly don't know where the time goes! Here is this little person full of personality who was just born yesterday. He is such a joy and we feel so lucky to have him.

His arrival has certainly been a growing process for all of us. Both my dh and I harbored secret fears of losing ourselves as we became parents. After all, we did have some yuppie couple tendencies: career driven, self interested, and spare time to engage in things like rollerblading, fine wine, sports, etc. The truth is that we did lose our old selves and evolve into the people we are today. We have become more patient, understanding, challenged (!), and socially aware. But I think that his true legacy is that we learned how to love in a completely new way.

Anyway, I just wanted to share our happiness! (Although if I'm truly honest with you, there is a tinge of sadness to my emotions too.)

Happy Birthday Cade! The terrific two's have begun! This is a wonderful age, Kelly...enjoy it!!! I think that the most fun is watching them become independent and start really developing their own likes and dislikes...though I understand that as they "cut the cord" there is a sort of a sadness...they are growing up!!!!

Are you going to have a little family b-day party?

      Happy Birthday Cade!

Kelly, what Kris says is true for me too. I really thought two was great (minus the constant fighting between twins). They start really verbalizing their thoughts, they become more confident, their self-esteems start blossoming, and they get more physical coordination and further develop their motor skills (wait until you see how fast he learns to skate or ride a tricycle). The whole world is opening up to him.

And I love three even more!!! I love this age with my girls. They've stopped fighting so much (they now argue, which is good for their conflict-resolution skills...the biting, hitting, and scratching had to stop!).

But whenever I see a little teeny tiny baby, I get all whistful and sad that it's going by so quickly.

Thanks for the empathy!!!! I swear that every new stage is my favorite stage! I'm just so flipping in love with the kid that I even think that the permanent marker drawing on the couch is kind of cute! You guys are correct, I love to see their little personalities burgeon forth. It is really neat to see a human develop.

We put him to down for nap on Sunday afternoon and decorated the house with streamers, balloons, etc. We didn't get him a lot, but we wrapped up a ton of stuff. (Quantity, not quality, seems to be important at this age.) My mom and dad drove up from Ohio and we made a cake. When he woke up, he had a look of sheer joy on his face as he entered the dining room with his "Guamma" and "Papa" and all the presents at the table. I put away the wheat germ and vegetables for the day and let him eat chocolate cake and McDonald's fries! He was allowed to run around naked and stay up until 9:00. Honestly, this day was more fun for my dh and I than it was for the baby.

To my chagrin, however, his favorite toy was the Fisher Price hockey sticks that we got him.... He drug them around the house chanting "hockey"! I think that we are raising a true blue Minnesotan. If he ever plays on a team, I'll have to be medicated to watch him. I can't even stand to watch the doctor give him a shot!

Oh, Happy Late Birthday to Cade!! I'm so glad that you had a very happy day with him!! It sounds like you all had tons of fun! Boy, you are strict! McD's fries only on birthdays?? Ha ha.

What else did the Birthday Fairy bring to Cade?

You know, hockey might be one of the safer sports? I don't know. My sister's fiance played soccer in college and has had like 10 knee surgeries.

            Kelly-

You'll just have to do what my mom did while my brother was playing football- she carried the spinal cord hotline number IN HER WALLET for 8 YEARS!! She was a total spaz too. She said she was always ready to hop the fence and run onto the field to make sure they didn't move him.

(Of course this is the same kid who fell backwards off the high dive, on to the cement, got up, climbed the ladder and then dove. Not a scratch on him.)

            Jenn

PS- move to Massachusetts and my friend will fix you a hot toddy-she says that helps when her boys are playing hockey!!
