    Welcome!

I agree with whomever pointed out that 3rd or 4th year of med school can change a LOT of opinions on what specialty they want. ROAD is great ... although I maintain that it should include Pathology but people don't fine PROAD as catchy.

Well Maybe ROAD can become ROAPED (sort of as in "roped").

As the wife of an EP, I can tell you, Emergency Medicine gets thrown in primarily based on number of shifts worked (The more traditional ROAD specialities are considered so because of lifestyle, including income). While money is good considering how little EPs work (DH will work a maximum of 14, 8 hour shifts per month), there is a much lower limit to how much money they make, compared to Derm, Optho, Rads, and Anesthesia. In Illinois, we had friends in Anesthesia making $1 mil plus take home doing pain medicine, and friends in Rads who started at $700,000. This isn't a possibility in EM, and there is no way to work up to that salary. Generally as EPs get older, their schedules get lighter, but not much increase in pay.

Don't get me wrong, DH will make plenty of money, just not as much as other specialties. He will make less in academics than he would working in another setup, but not much. Once you take into account student loans, he'll make a comfortable living, but we'll definitely never be rich.

Another question about ROAD.... I've always heard about Derm being very hard to get into. How about the others? I'm sure a lot of physicians would go that route considering the obvious perks.

            Any thoughts???

It lists the match rates for different specialties. I think all of the ROAD ones are competitive.
