  • Newbie engaged to an incoming PGY1-General Surgery

    Hi everyone!
I have been perusing the sight on and off for a month, and finally decided to introduce myself! I am newly engaged (April Fool's Day of all days!) to a man beginning General Surgery residency in Indiana. I have been with him since halfway through 3rd year, though we went to Sunday school together as kiddos and lived down the street from each other most of our lives. We are buying a house and deciding when the big day will be, hopefully something during his vacation time this year, whenever that will be. I am unsure what to expect this year, but know that we have very good communication skills and that we will only develop/refine them further as our lives change.

I went through a period of acute illness with many surgeries and much time in the hospital myself, and got to see one side of the interns and residents lives as a patient. Now I get to see the other side of things I suppose!

I myself am a graduate student in Epidemiology, and will be finishing up in December. Many new changes to come this year for us, and after looking around here a little, it seems like everyone is very supportive and has such good advice, and I hope to pick people's brains a little as time goes on. At this point, I just have no idea what to expect, aside from assuming the worst so that any small extras are just exciting and well appreciated. Any advice about the adjustments of first year would be great.

Is anyone here in Indiana too?

Thanks for having such a great support system available!

      Hi and welcome!

I live just north of Indy and love the area. My husband is a neonatologist attending almost 4 years out of training. We have three daughters under 5 years old.

Hope to learn more about you. Congrats on the house buying! Let me know if you have any questions. mommax3 is from Indy too.

Epidemiology - I had to look it up. For those as clueless as I was, I'll save you some time.

Epidemiology is the study of factors affecting the health and illness of populations, and serves as the foundation and logic of interventions made in the interest of public health and preventive medicine. It is considered a cornerstone methodology of public health research, and is highly regarded in evidence-based medicine for identifying risk factors for disease and determining optimal treatment approaches to clinical practice.

          Welcome to the boards.

Wow, thanks everyone, what a warm welcome!

And, might I add, that description of Epidemiology makes it sound so glamorous. Well, as glamorous as public health gets. But its right on as to the technical aspects. Very statistically based, good solid math fun all around. So between my fiance and I, we have evidence-based medicine pretty much covered.

Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare, or if I can, for what is coming in July when he starts?

And one other thing that makes me nervous, I keep reading about ROAD being family friendly, which I can understand. Big bucks, more free time. And while I wish my boyfriend had chosen that, I also know he wouldn't be happy in any of those. Surgery really fits him. So this makes me nervous for what is in store for us in the future. Does that mean that all surgeons' wives have to stay home if they want families? Does anyone here work part-time? This is what I would love one day. To work part-time would be great. Any advice on this would be welcome as well...

                      Thanks again for the welcome!

Not all surgical spouses stay home - I'm choosing to stay home after our first child but really only because I never found my "true calling" - I know several resident families in surgery where the wife still works and they have little ones. They just have to be a bit more flexible in their work life b/c if there is an emergency or the little one gets sick its they that have to take off not the Dr.

Surgery is do-able - a lot of people say its the devil, but like you my DH wouldn't be happy doing anything else and we are surviving, happily.

As for what you will encounter come July I have found it is highly program specific. Here DH's 2nd year was actually worse then his 1st and they've gotten easier as he's progressed. Interns are usually scutted meaning they have the worst schedule, the most call and get the crappiest jobs - it sucks but it will get better and you'll get through it.
