  • Hi from Colorado

Hello! My name is Amy. My husband will actually be a non-traditional applicant to med school.... we graduated college in 2003. He is an electrical engineer but hates his job and decided he'd like to go to med school. So he's been volunteering in a hospital and just started taking some of the pre-reqs he will need. He should be able to apply to med school next fall. So the road ahead is a long one! I know very little about the whole process but I'm trying to learn as much as I can.

We've been married about 9 months now but we've been together for over 7 years. No kids... actually, that's one of the things I'm worried about, when we'll have kids. I'm certainly not ready right now, so at least I have a few more years to worry about it. Currently I'm getting my doctorate in Atmospheric Sciences.

Looking forward to all your advice and tips!

Hello and welcome, from an even older non-trad spouse just a bit further on in the process (DH is starting M1 in a few weeks!). We're both also EE. Best of luck, and good for you preparing yourself as much as you can ahead of time.

by "applying next fall", do you mean taking the MCAT in August 08, to apply for fall 09 start?

Poky- He's taking the MCAT and applying Fall 2008. So he won't start until Fall 2009. Luckily right now he's able to work and take classes at night, but next spring he'll probably go to full-time class to finish up Org Chem II and some other classes.

                Thanks for the welcome!

I think that's courageous to admit you're not happy with your current career and take the leap of faith to start over. You'll most definitely have some exciting and interesting times ahead of you.

Welcome, my DH had a couple non-traditional students in his class, one had been a mechanic. I wish you luck, you sound like you're on the right path.
