  • New and saying hi!

I just found this board last week and figured I would come out of lurking and say hi. I am a 25 year old wife of an MS4 and mother to two beautiful daughters ages 2 and 5 months. We are currently going through the residency application process and thinking about the years to come is making me very nervous. Not knowing where we'll be in another year is very unsettling. We are currently in PA and are hoping to stay here throughout residency.

I'm glad to have found this board and know that I will be using in the years to come!

He has been set on Ob/gyn but now all the sudden is worried about what kind of family life he'll be able to have in that field and is thinking of doing IM. He needs to decide like today what he wants to do. We're both very stressed about this! I think he should do Ob/gyn because it's obvious that that is what he has enjoyed the most out of all his rotations.

welcome. good luck with decision making. my dh applied to both IM and ob/gyn. he chose ob/gyn.

last year he was having doubts about ob/gyn, lifestyle, family life, and other things...almost made the move to family practice, but decided to stay with ob/gyn. he is much happier now into his second year of residency.

i wont lie..the first year for him and our family sucked BIG TIME.

he is happy with his decision to stick with it. ask me in 3 years what i think.

          good luck!

:hey: Hi and welcome! Good luck with this year as your DH decides on his specialty, applies and interviews for residency.

                        Welcome.

I always thought the whole waiting for match day/wondering where we are going to end up bit was harder for the spouse than the student. No matter what we were going to a place where she would be taking her next step. We obviously would follow, and willingly, but her foundation was built in regardless of where we ended up. I don't know if that made much sense, but it was definitely more stressful on me than it was on her.

That said, it was an incredibly exciting year and one we will always remember.

One big piece of advice, keep your mind open, I guarantee you will be surprised about where a couple of programs are placed on that final rank list. And make sure you have a say in how that list turns out.

                            Hi!

It's nice to see other MS4 families out there. My spouse is also MS4, so we are working on ERAS right now along with all the other paperwork and decisions. My DH knows what specialty he wants to go into (Emergency Med) - Although the work is a great fit for him, it is still giving us some worries about what shift work will be like as he grows older.

I too, at times feel a little anxious about not knowing where we'll be in a year ... at the same time it's exciting. We have a list of about 30 programs he'll be applying to.. and many many of the cities look wonderful. You said you're in PA - Philadelphia is one of the cities I feel good about as a possibility. Our number one criteria is the type of school we want for our children (Waldorf).. so we are looking for residency programs with that nearby. We feel that the continuity of that will help them with the move - plus we love the education they are getting.

DH has his first interview tomorrow - at the place he is doing an external rotation. It's nice to get the ball rolling.

It sounds like your DH wants to do ob/gyn the most - as a mid career med student's spouse - I know how important it is to follow one's heart. My DH's dad was an ob/gyn and absolutely loved his career, really felt he did something worthwhile. He was the old time ob who delivered for all his own patients in a busy but small urban private practice. It seems like they may have more of a set schedule now, but I don't really know so shouldn't say!

Best to you in your MS4 year!!! I'll be here on imsn with you!!!
