  • Hello from Connecticut

    Hello All-

I just found this site today--cool idea! I'm married to a fourth year medical student who wants to go into pediatrics. I guess it is too late for her to change since she has already submitted her ERAS!

We've been married for just over two years and we are doing great! I have been pleasantly surprised with the way things are going. I really thought being married to a medical student would be really hard. At times it can be, but we have done a good job getting out, visiting family, etc.

I'm basically here to offer my perspective, meet others in my "predicament", and just waste some time at work! Feel free to contact me.

    Welcome Greg!

I am Michele and my fiance is a first year medical student. I'm a second year veterinary student. The boards have a lot of great people on them. I'm glad to hear that being married to a med student isn't that bad! Maybe you should write an article on how you did it. The site can always use more articles.

      Greg,

Welcome to the board! I think that you will find that we have an ever growing pool of male spouses to chat about the unique challenges of being a male spouse of a physician.

Peds sounds like an awesome field. Good luck with the match. Do you intend to stay close to Conneticut?

Kelly/Michele2005, thanks for your replies. We are actually looking to get away from Connecticut. A good portion of the residency programs she has applied to are outside of new england. I suspect we will end up in the midwest somewhere. Almost all of the places we could end up, however, have at least one friend or family member living there, so I am sure it will all work out fine. As for an article, I'll have think about it. Meanwhile I'll just troll around a bit!

          Welcome Greg-

We're almost halfway through our last lear of peds residency! It's do-able, that's for sure. Internship year was long but it gets progressively better.

We're here in San Antonio, my husband is in the Army. He's applied for a peds neuro fellowship in DC (where I'm from ) so I'm crossing my fingers and toes that he's accepted.

          Glad you found us-

            Welcome

Welcome to the group, Greg Glad to have you.

Like your wife, my BF is also a 4th year med student. He's hoping to go into Neurology, so he's got an Early Match (Jan. 31). We're starting the process of interviewing now. He has his first one next week in Atlanta, then Cleveland. It looks life we'll (I use "We" liberally because I'll be traveling with him to most of his interviews) be interviewing throughout Nov, Dec. to maybe early-Jan.

What about your wife & you? Has she started interviewing yet? It's such a stressful time - just waiting for the "Letter/e-mail invitation" then going there, interviewing, then waiting. uugh.

            Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Dures, thanks for the welcome. No, my wife hasn't started interviewing yet. She has had quite a few positive email replies, though, so I am getting prepared to drop the bling when it comes time to buy airplane tickets. I'm sure you know how much it can cost if not scheduled properly.

$th year (the $ was a typo, but thinking again I think it is appropriate ) is stressful in some ways but not others for her. She is actually in very good spirits, but she gets really frustrated when things are not all "together", and there is nothing she can do about it. A prime example is the continual harassment required to get some of these docs to write up and turn in her letters of recommendation. She feels like she has to micro-manage everything. Once the ERAS is officially complete she'll feel a lot better.

Anyways, thats about it. I appreciate everyone's comments. Maybe we can get a new section in the forum for husbands of physicians/medical students? You know, so we can blabber on about sports, cars, sports cars, work, etc. Heh heh...

                Hey Greg-

We call it the Mr. MD section for lack of a better term. Feel free to go there and vent away- and feel free to rename it whatever you guys want to! Just let Kris know.

                  Hi and welcome Greg!

Glad you found us. My boyfriend is a first-year med student...so we're just starting. It's been a big adjustment and there are good days and bad ones, but overall, we're doing well. It's good to hear that you're doing well with your marriage!

If you ever want to talk sports to a girl let me know. Haha. I live in Philly so I'm an Eagles fan (go Sixers and Flyers too!). I also have a soft spot for Cleveland's teams (mostly the Indians and the Browns) since I was born and raised there.

Look forward to hearing more from you!

                    Travel Discounts for Interviews

                    Greg,

Here's a link for airline travel discounts for med students interviewing all over the country. Unfortunately, they're not very substantial and I'm not sure if they even apply to accompanying spouses/SOs. Fortunately for me, I get a 25% discount on United and Amercian thru my work. I also accrued enough frequent flier miles from all those times I visited Jay in Philly or wherever he was doing a rotation. But you are so right about having to plan these interviews/trips out. Jay actually had to postpone one of his interviews at the last minute because the tix was prohibitively expensive (under the 14 day advance). I also found Orbitz & Expedia to be very good in searching for low airfare.

Dures, thanks for the link. We have crazy AA frequent flyer miles so I'm sure we'll put them to good use. Even though the whole interview thing will be stressful for us (her b/c of the actual interview, me b/c I'll be left home a lot), I am pretty excited about the next 6 months. Our lives will be changing really fast! A new start will be a welcomed change of pace.

                        Continuing on Sharon's thread...

Continuing on Greg's & Sharon's thread..., count me in on the Sports Talk. I'm a HUGE college sports fan (esp. football & basketball, essentially anything UCLA and PAC-10. Gee, can you tell?), but I also love the Pros. How can I not when we have the world champs in basketball AND baseball. (big puff of hot air)

Lakers rule!!!! now so do the Angels!!! (uh-oh! Did I just start the trash-talking??!! 8) )

                        Southern California rocks, baby

                        Dures

                        P.S.
Jay and I get into our competitive mode during college football season because of the PAC-10 vs. Big 10 rivalry.
