  • Hi from Oregon

I am glad to have found this site and I am looking forward to chatting with others. We are in a bit of a different situation - after teaching for 20 years my husband was accepted to medical school. We have three children 23, 20 and an 18 year old who just graduated from high school. I design knitting patterns and teach handwork at a Waldorf (Rudolf Steiner) school and I am staying in our hometown while my husband does his pre-clinical years away. He is in a Northwest Track program that will allow him to do his rotations up here.

We are happy to be on this journey together!

DH and I were also in Oregon, and he'd been working for 13 years when he was accepted to medical school last year. We don't have kids, but one of his classmates has teenagers. It's too late for us, but how does this "northwest track" thing work? Where is he doing his pre-clinical work, if you don't mind my asking? We definitely would have been interested in that, had we known about it!

Did OHSU wait until mid-June to let people know where they were on the wait list again this year?

Hi and welcome! I'd love to hear more about your knitting patterns, LOL. And do you know Southern Oregon? I'm dying to meet someone who can give me the scoop on Klamath Falls (we lived in PDX for five years but never explored that part of the state!)

            Re: Hi from Oregon

He is in the Northwest Track for the DO school in Los Angeles at COMP so he has his first two years of class there and then rotations here and he will be turning 50 next December in the middle of his first year.

It is nice to hear there are others here in the forum with older kids!

About the patterns - I mostly sell to yarn shops/yarn companies and I am finishing up a website for my patterns only. I owned a large yarn shop with a cafe in Portland and recently sold it. It is nice to just teach classes there and not be busy with all the details.
            Thanks for the warm welcome.

Ooh...that yarn/coffee shop on Hawthorne? Or was there another one I didn't know about?

Are you on ravelry? There are a few of us here who are.

That NW track program sounds interesting, for sure!

Glad to see another PNWer - there are a few of us here. I grew up in Seattle, but spent 13 years in Portland before moving for med school. Looking forward to moving back, eventually. Hopefully.

                    Re: Hi from Oregon

It wasn't the one on Hawthorne - it is in Sellwood. I can't imagine living anywhere but Portland. I am in all sorts of online yarn-type groups including one called "knitting beyond the Hebrides" but I am not active on them this summer, I will probably renew those connections once school (and the rain) starts again.

Yes, do join Ravelry and when you do, come find us at "Help! I married a doctor!" LOL. Did you know they have a mechanism for selling your patterns through the site? There are nearly 150,000 fiber artists there, so you might tap into a good market that way.

Oi, I used to love Sellwood. A bunch of my friends lived over there among the Reedies, LOL.

I am already in the thick of Ravelry but do you mean that you have a particular group there?

Hmmm ... when I start back up I will check in.

Ah, gotcha. Yes, there's a group there for medical spouses. It's super, super quiet, but there's at least one other designer there.
