  • The new girl. . .

Hi. I'm a new medical spouse. . . brand new. My husband and I have been married just over 200 days. (Yes, we are still counting days. It's been 7 months). He finished medical school a few months ago and just started an off-cycle internship in Cleveland, OH about 2 weeks ago. So, I have a new name, new home, new phone number, and new climate (I'm a native Floridian) all in less than a year. . . and I'm scared to pieces. Any advise?

Welcome!! The best advice I can give you, you have already done...You found us. You will find a very supportive group here. I, too, have been there - new job, new town, new everything because we married 2 weeks before med school began. Fast forward 12 years and I am proud to say that we are still happily married despite med school, a combined residency program and fellowship.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

Thank you. That sounds great. Any tips for getting involved/meeting people in a new community? And how about dealing with the winter weather?

If you're at UH, contact the residency office and ask who is running HOWA this year. It's a spouse support group and I made several good friends through it when my dh was in training.

As for the winter -- egads -- it can be really tough there. The grey skies are worse than anything IMO. I don't know .... sun lamps, maybe?

            Hi!

Congratulations on getting married! My husband just started his internship this past summer. Good luck with the winter weather. Snow is fun... Sort of... I worked in Columbus, OH, for a few months one winter, and I would highly recommend a long wool coat, a scarf, and cashmere-lined leather gloves. (The gloves aren't as expensive as they sound if you can find them at Ross or Marshall's, or somewhere like that. I stock up when I can find them for under $30 a pair.)

              Hi!
You'll get used to the weather, I promise! I'm from a rather mild climate (not as mild as Florida though!). I second the cashmere-lined gloves. Get yourself a down coat. I've got one that reaches my calves. It's worth it. Lands End has some cheaper ones that you can throw in the wash.

Cashmere lined gloves. Check. Wool coat. Check.

I don't know if Cleveland gets a ton of snow, but I hate the smell of wool when it's wet. It's like a dog coming in from the rain.

Coat shopping. I think I'll miss that when we move!

Congratualtions on the wedding. I can relate to you a hundred percent on the situation of everything being new except the marriage, my husband did his internship year in Roanoke(our home), then we moved to Pittsburgh. I am sorry I don't have much advice to offer you since I am trying to figure those things out myself. I just know time will allow you to adjust, I am already starting to feel a little better about things after 3 months.

Jane/Jenn is right about the grey days. That was the biggest adjustment for us. Be prepared for 4+ months of NO sun.

Welcome to this site, and to Cleveland.

4+ months is nothing. Here it's more like 12 months and then there's that one day of sunshine. ..and when I say sunshine I mean that the sun finds a miniscule rift in the clouds and shines for about 15 glorious minutes. After that it typically rains for two weeks straight. At least.

                          But hey, I'm not bitter.

                          Oh, and welcome!
