  • A little NEWer-- too soon maybe?

So I'm not officially married, or engaged, however, my boyfriend and I have been together for 5 years (throughout his medical school career) and now is in the last stages (MS4) of his schooling. He's a DO, which means the "match" will be a little more difficult and choosing radiology as his specialty, makes it even more harder!! So I'm just sitting back and waiting to find out where we will be next.......He's currently doing his rotations up north until he graduates in may (we live in florida). He's taken both boards (MD and DO), just incase he wants to apply for MD path. I'm just worried about matching and if he doesn't match, where we will end up, also, friends and family.. it will be a whole new town with, depending on where we end up, probably nobody I will know. I eventually want to apply to Physician Assistant programs, however, I'm sort of in a hault while he is getting settled into his residency.

I don't know if anyone has gone through this issue, but if so, please advise. This site is pretty helpful and very interesting.....

    Thank you

Hi there!!! Welcome. :hey: We may not have gone through your exact same issues BUT all of us have gone through some version of it. There is nothing about medical training that is easy OR rather easy on a relationship/marriage/family. However, it can be done - we have several here who are post training and others who are going through school/residency/fellowships and albeit challenging, are still pursuing their own careers, aspirations, family planning despite the SO's medical careers.

I think deep down, come match day, no matter how confident we were about a program there was still that chance that instills the fear that you may not match or match at your last choice where you would have no support. For me, I was there on match day wondering if I could continue my doctorate if we had to move away. It worked out for us. We matched at our first choice BUT we had to prepare ourselves for the alternative.

I think you have found a great group to bounce ideas/feelings - I have always been amazed how many here are either going through the same or had experience and lived to tell about it.

Post often! Can't wait to get to know you!!
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

Is your boyfriend at Nova? That's where Dr. K and my brother got their DO degrees. They did rotations up north, took the MD & DO boards, etc. also. The match is miserable but there is very little you can do to control it. I was singing "Que Sera Sera" for months.

        Hi!

I think the Match is the craziest system ever invented... Good luck - it sounds like he is very well prepared. I hope he gets into a program he'll like in a place you can work on you PA program.

                    Welcome!!!

The match is a crazy time. DH and I were both anticipating the moment but everything worked out. He is also a DO so we were a little worried as well b/c he was trying to match into an anesthesiology allopathic program and he did. Things would be a lot easier if they could interview for positions rather than match into them. Hopefully you will end up somehwere with a PA program. I am putting grad school on halt until after residency. I wish you the best of luck with the match.

It will be okay. I know this is useless advise, but worrying doesn't help. Get your beauty sleep. Que Sera Sera.

The Match was crazy for us too - we knew he would *probably* get his first choice but you never really know until you get that email. With this process you will always be "waiting" for something for the next couple years...

Welcome and good luck with the Match!
