  • First Timer

I am new to this medical world. My boyfriend, whom I have been dating since our first year of college (almost 6 years now) just started med school this fall. While I am very proud of him and his accomplishments, I am quite nervous for the journey ahead. I have moved to a new city where I do not really know anybody, with the exception of his family. While I do feel very fortunate that we have his parents and many cousins/aunts/uncles close by, I am starting to feel very lonely and isolated in a new city without my own network of friends and supports. I did manage to find a pretty good job, but I still do not feel like I have found a place where I can flourish. I welcome advice but also genuine converstaion about the road ahead.

I am glad that there is a network like this out there

Yep. Been there, done that! Hang in there because it really does get better!

My best advice to you is to make lots of friends quickly! The first place that DH and I lived together, most of the people that I hung out with were his friends from med school. They were a great group of people, but when DH had something to do for school or when he just had to work late, pretty much all of our friends were right there with him, and I spent a lot of nights sitting around our apartment by myself. Not fun! We've since moved halfway across the country, where we have no family support network at all, and I've learned from my mistakes. From day one here, I've tried to strike up conversations with as many people as I can, our neighbors and folks I see when I'm out taking the dogs for a walk, other spouses from DH's work, people I meet at work, the guy picking up his mail at the same time I am, anyone. And in the short six months that we've lived here, I've made quite a few friends, feel like I have the start of a great support network, and think I'm more "settled" here than I ever was in our old city!

Anyway, like PP said, I'm sure there are tons of people here who can relate!

Welcome! Moving to a new city can be scary, but a lot of fun. It's great that some of his family is there - hopefully they can help you learn the fun things to do. Congratulations on finding a job so quickly, too!
