  • Hi There, I'm new!

    Hi there everyone,

I was so happy to stumble across this board! Just to introduce myself: I'm in my 3rd year of law school, and I am in a long distance marriage with my husband who is a 2nd year medical school student in a Caribbean medical school. He is almost done with his Caribbean stint (fingers crossed)... We just got married this summer, after being together for 5 years. I didn't realize so many people go through the same things when in a relationship with a partner in the medical field.... I was just lurking for a few days, and it really helped me put things into perspective because honestly, its tough sometimes and I know I have my days where I am like WTH I hate this :banghead: I want my husband back! I also wonder how we are going to manage our careers, I'm starting with a Mid-Law firm in the fall and I really do want to stay at this firm and grow professionally. Seems like the JD/MD match isn't really that easy! But anyhow, enough about me thanks everyone for sharing and helping me put things into perspective!!

      Hi!

Wow! It does sound like your life has gotten complicated! It's so nice to have a group of people who can understand what you're going through. So, your husband will try to transfer back to the US next year? Do you know where yet, or does he interview for it? Post often - we're looking forward to getting to know you!

        Re: Hi There, I'm new!

        Thanks everyone!!

Hi Ladymoreta, just to answer your question: My husband will hopefully be back spring of 09. The way that the Caribbean medical school curriculum is set up, they do their basic sciences on the island + Kaplan prep for Step 1. So this spring, he will be preparing for Step 1 and then coming back home. Then he'll be taking the Step (Not to mention Im taking the bar examination this summer :thud: ). After his scores are released, he starts rotations at affiliated hospitals in the States. While its going to be great to have him closer, I don't know which state he'll be placed in yet. Hopefully close!

I met my hubby before he even thought he was going in to med school.... life did get complicated fast! We didn't realize or take in to account it was going to be such a lifestyle change!

I am glad that you found us -

My husband is in a similar program where he does his first two years in California and then 3rd and 4th year rotations back here in the Northwest. It goes pretty well here if I keep pretty busy. Do you have very much choice as to where he does his 3rd and 4th year rotations?? Ours will be clustered in one city unless he wants to do an elective somewhere else.

          Anyway, welcome!

^ I know that he can elect his first, second, and third choices for geographic location, but they will usually give him what is available at the time, so it doesn't mean he gets his first choice. I think also if he finds a place he can do his rotations that is not on the list, and get Dean and hospital approval, then he can also do that. Im just nervous, since I'm going to be in one place for work--which will be really busy--and he may not be living with me! *Sigh*

Thanks so much EVERYONE for such a warm welcome and Im glad to see that there are other JD/MD couples and those who have survived the Caribbean make it through. It gives me a lot of strength.
I will be posting more, but have exams at the moment.... Federal Income Tax exam tomorrow!

From another half of a JD/MD (to be) couple:

I just graduated this past Spring, so the stress of finals is still a recent memory. Good luck!!

Hey there! I'm another legally brunette newlywed in a commuter marriage. Did you see the thread re: JD/MD marriages? You're right, it's not easy. Neither is commuting. But it's temporary and we are doing our best to make it work. Welcome to our World!
