  • New to the page, not new to ups and downs of medical spouse

Well, this is something that I could have used a few years ago! I am married to a 2nd year pediatrics resident, who did HER intern year twice(making this her 3rd year after graduation...and yes the student loans are calling in the fall!). We moved from OK to MO for her to benefit from the teaching at the free standing children's hospital in Kansas City. We got married while she was in Med School and I was going to school full-time and working a 40+ week. Then we had our first son before her graduation and we decided that I would stay home and raise our son. Since that time, it has been more than I could have ever imagined. Not only for the questions I get about being married to a Dr (ie. she makes more $ than me), but I am also a stay-at-home-dad. So, now we are expecting our second boy in April of this year. My wife feels like she has missed lots of the important things in our childs life, but he knows that his momma is "helping sick kids" at the hospital, and that is pretty special to me. I hope to be able to contribute my point of view to this page!
    Thanks for the time!

    Matt,

Glad you have joined us. There are several male spouses around -- hopefully you will be able to bond with some of them -- and several stay-at-home-parents here, too. (I'm one of them.) I guess I should introduce myself -- I am Sally, mom to three boys aged 7, 4, and 1. My husband is an OB/GYN in the military, and right now we are living in TX. He has been out of residency for about a year and a half. We are originally from Indiana and hope to get back there someday.

I look forward to seeing you post.

        Matt,

Welcome to the boards...I really do believe that it is harder for the male spouses because of warped societal expectations. I know that it rankles me when I am cast aside by someone when they find out my hubby is a doctor. People aren't so subtle when they impute their stereotypes, are they?

        Anyway, welcome to the boards.

          Hi Matt:

Welcome to the group. I take it your wife is at Mercy. My husband did a rotation there this past fall. I am originally from the KC area and hopefully will get back for residency this summer. I really miss the city. We have two kids, a three year old son and a 9 month old daughter and one one the way. There are a lot of great things to do with the kids in KC. Look forward to talking with you.

              Hi Matt,
We're in KC, too--we love it here! We were in the car tonight and heard the commercial about Mercy being one of the top 10 children's hospitals nationwide--that is awesome!
Welcome to the boards. I have found this to be a great place to go when you need a listening ear!!!
