J applied ASAP in June and has or had 7 interviews (5 Texas schools) and 1 rejection (Vanderbilt)--hasn't heard from the other schools (all out-of-state) yet. Is this good, average...?

To be honest, I am a little scared. He has an almost perfect GPA and what I think is a good MCAT, but he's not from a disadvantaged background, so I know that wont help. He's got to get into at least ONE Texas school...right?
He definitely sounds like an excellent applicant. I don't know what's normal, but getting interviews for 7 of the 8 he's heard back from sounds very promising. (Perhaps those who witnessed that stage can chime in with more useful anecdotes!)

There are a lot of great applicants to medical school, and sometimes who gets into certain programs and who doesn't seems confusing. A few of my friends from Indiana are also in med school. My friend who went to Michigan for undergrad observed that she and her peers who had doctors as parents didn't get into IU, and her peers whose parents were not doctors did get in. DH, whose parents are not doctors, was accepted. My other friend from high school, who went to undergrad with DH and whose dad is a neurologist, did not get in. I'm sure it's just a coincidence, but with a highly competitive pool, you start to notice things like that and think they matter.

I know schools like to have diversity and appeal to those groups that are underrepresented, but upper-middle class people still get into MD programs. I don't think it's worthwhile to worry about something you can't control.

It's great that he's applied to so many programs. I think that's the key. Just about every med student I know had at least one surprise rejection, and I guess that's really all I was suggesting you look out for. Keep options and minds open, and I'm sure it'll work out for the best.*

*I'm also giving this advice to myself re residency application!
