  • Back again (very infrequent poster)

    Hello,
I found this site when my husband started residency in 2005 and posted a few times then. Since then we have had 2 kids (will be age 1 in November and age 3 in January) and I started a local mommy group and have kept active with that. (BTW, I forgot my old username so I just signed up with this one.)

Why am I back? Well, General Surgery residency is coming to an end and we are currently playing the waiting game to see if he matches to a Trauma/Critical Care fellowship. All of the programs he applied to will require us to relocate - his #1 choice is 8 hours by car.

None of my friends really understand this whole process and the idea of moving to an entirely new part of the country with our two kids and dog is very daunting! So you may see me around here looking for some ideas and support on occasion.

Welcome back - I think moving for the jobs/training is foreign to a lot of people.

I am very fortunate to have great family and friends around. The hardest part was the first year adjusting to residency and throwing out the whole notion of having a 'normal' married life - eating dinner at 6pm, spending weekends together. I also worked until I was laid off when my youngest was 2 weeks old, so I was pretty busy working and taking care of my older daughter.

Moving somewhere without my family/friend network of 'surrogate spouses' is overwhelming at times though. I am hoping that the hours are not as insane as they have been once he is in fellowship at a more, um, laidback, hospital.
