  • Here we go...

Hello. I am brand new here with my 35 yr old husband of 9 years beginning Med School in a week. I'm just beginning to get that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach- nerves, nerves, nerves. I'm so very excited for my husband and proud of what he is undertaking, but now the reality of everything is finally sinking in. I guess I'm here for a pretty common reason- wondering how this huge 8ish year time-sucker is going to affect my marriage. And my margarita intake.

Hoping to find a little sanity and respite here, maybe a little reassurance from time to time. Nice to meet everyone!

Welcome! So glad to have you! We have several people on here whose spouses are just about to start medical school. I'd say you might want to go ahead and start stockpiling some tequila, just in case!

Welcome! I can't imagine starting this journey a year from now which is when my DH would be 35. In fact after 5 years of medical school, 7 years of residency and one year of fellowship we'll be one year from being done at 35. I wish you tons of luck, this site is a great place!

            and nice to meet you!

Do you have kids? Do you work?

This is a good place to ask questions, vent, and find other people who "get it!"

Greetings, and welcome! My husband's in his fourth (of five) years of med school, and is turning 39 in a week. We'd been married 6 years when he started med school. In short, I *totally* get where you're coming from. What did he do before he decided he had to go back to school? Did you have to move for his school?

Welcome! You came to the right place. One of our best friends began medical school at the same age as your DH. The age actually helped him once he began his clerkships and residency because he did not "look like a kid" - unlike my DH who had to put up with Doogie jokes all the time. Our friend also handled some of the stressors better because he saw and still sees medicine as his career not his life since he had a life/marriage/kids before medicine. We have learned much from them because DH and I married a few weeks before med school began....medicine (the mistress ) has always been part of our married life.

                Glad to have you!!
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

Welcome!! Dh started med school in his thirties as well. He will be finishing up fellowship in two years (or as he likes to say, "32 grade" ). We will both be 43 when he is done, our oldest will graduate from high school that same year and we will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. Coming into this journey as a nontraditional student can be scary and has another set of challenges but it can be done. Good luck with everything.

That's awesome! Welcome! We've known a number of second-career folks who've started med school (and law school, too) in their mid-30s. His life and professional experience will serve him well in handling the stress and keeping his priorities straight!

(We knew a guy in his late 50s who went back to med school, BTW. Your hubbie is a youngin'!)

Welcome! We're a little older than most of DH's classmates and residents, too. dH refers to himself as the program geezer. Enjoy the journey as best you can and feel free to come here to vent when things get a little sideways.

Welcome! My husband and I were both a little older when we went through graduate school, I think it makes it easier. You found the right spot for some great support!
