  • Hello everyone, I'm new!

Hello, I'm new to this site as well as the whole experience of med school. My bf just started his first year of med school on Monday and I am already seeing how things are going to change. We've been together 6.5 years (since I was 15) so I am looking for any advice you can give to prepare me for what's ahead. Thanks!!

Welcome! This is a great site, and you're fortunate to have found it early in the process. Did you have to move for his medical school? Are you working? Looking forward to getting to know you!

Welcome! It is hard to say what to expect, it really seems to depend on the med student. I hope you post often!

Welcome... and if you're looking for advice, you've found the right place. This site has been around for a really long time (although many of us have been here a year or less), so simply searching through the archives and reading old threads is a great place to get started. You'll find tremendous support here. Good luck!

I moved with him after college from Boston to Hanover, NH for Dartmouth Med. I have had a few job offers in the area and am deciding what's best for me. Some offers are full-time, which is what I need to pay the bills, while others are part-time, which I feel would free me up to volunteer, get to know the area, and help my bf with daily, mundane tasks. Should I compromise my potential to help him, or should I try to balance it all with a full-time job? Any suggestions?

Lesson #1 about IMSN - you ask for advice and you'll get it...plenty of it - sometimes more sides of an issue than you ever imagined.

Re: full time vs part-time, I'd say go with what is going to give YOU the best quality of life. Medical training is the pits the majority of the time. It helps if you are making enough money to not worry about bills, or have extra $ to take a trip or go out to eat, etc. However, if said full-time job is sucking the life out you that you are emotionally drained, then it may be better to do the part-time thing and sleep better at night. My first job when DH started school was one of those suck the life out of you jobs. I was a wreck and he was not around much to lend support. I finally quit and went to graduate school full-time while we lived off of loans for a semester. I then got another full-time job that not only allowed me to continue with school but also gave me the flexibility to do the stuff DH never had time to do while in training. When he graduated, I invited my whole office staff to the dinner because DH and I could not have done it without their support. So, it really is up to you, your relationship with your bf, your career goals, financial needs, etc. Whatever will give you the best quality of life.
