Hello All,
I'm really happy to find this place. I just discovered this forum when researching on the internet about international medical graduates (IMG) or foreign medical graduates (FMG) in the USA. My Husband is an Egyptian National and has been in the US for almost a year. We've just been through a very long immigration process and he's a lawful permanent resident (LPR) now with his 10 year green card.
His English is good but we're working on pronunciation daily so he can be his best. We've been married for four years and together for seven. We don't have kids yet or pets. We plan to be financially stable first before starting our family hopefully in two years. We're both the same age in our 30's. He's already graduated from medical school in Egypt and completed his residency there and became a practicing internal medicine and minor surgery doctor. While we were married he also served his compulsory duty in the Egyptian Military as a doctor for 16 months. After that while waiting on immigration I lived in Egypt with him while he worked as a doctor in a clinic for tourists in a resort town. He worked 14-16 hour days while I was living there.
He comes from a medical family. His Sister is a Cardiologist working on her PhD back East in the US. She's passed all her United States Medical License Equivalent (USMLE) steps and is a licensed doctor here and has been offered a residency position at the place she is studying. We think it is great since she gets to skip the match and go straight to residency. She still has until October this year to decide since she is still working on her PhD. Her Husband did his PhD at the same place a few years before and has been an Orthopedic Surgeon for 17 years. They are also Egyptian. He's studying for his USMLE steps currently along with my Husband. My Husband spent some time with them back East last year doing an observership at one of the hospitals near them. It's good he did that since he was able to make contacts with other foreign medical graduates and see what it's like working in a hospital here. He's looking to do an externship this year while he continues to study for and take his USMLE Steps. It's nice to have his family here to guide us on the steps and for matching and placing. We're not sure if they will stay here. Though we'd love them to. They are weighing the pros and cons.
I'm looking to learn as much as I can about the process and share that with my spouse so we have an idea of what to be prepared for when it's time to start his residency or fellowship. I've found a few other resources online and some books I'm looking forward to reading with him. I figure it will kill two birds with one stone. We'll learn about the process together, spend time together and practice his pronunciation as we read aloud together. I worked in administration in the medical field during the last decade so I have some knowledge already of what it is like to work inside a hospital and clinics. I've changed my career since then and obtained a bachelor of science degree and I hope to go on and get my Masters. We're working out the details on that currently because of the timing of his residency and family planning.
I'm also looking for support during this process and hoping to make new friends. Sorry for all the jargon. I'm new so I'm unsure what you use or are familiar with. When explaining it to others who have little to no knowledge of the process it's easier to first identify what I'm talking about before going straight to their abbreviations. Even I am learning new medical abbreviations on here used to identify medical spouse's and where they are at in the process.
What would we be considered? IMG Step 1? FMG Step 1?
He's planning to take step one in October 2011. Then step two Jan 2012 and then the other part of step two in July 2012. After that his Sister told us he may apply for Matching and Placing in September 2012. After the Match in March 2013 we hope to move and start a family. Some say he may take Step 3 before his match and some say he may take Step 3 after his first year of Residency that it all depends on where he applies.
