Hi, Welcome! Dh was just telling me this week he wants to move us to NY. He misses the crowdedness of Cairo. I've never been to NY. All I can think about it is that it's expensive to live there so I imagine it being more difficult to start a family if we moved there on a resident's pay. How do people make it there?

NY is simultaneously awesome and overwhelming place to live. It's so much fun to visit and I had visited a couple of times before we moved here but living here is a whole other ballgame! It is very expensive to live and we are lucky that hubs gets a pretty good salary for a resident, especially since I've had a hard time finding employment since we share one car. We live in a studio apartment on the third floor of a walkup building. I'm hoping that climbing stairs as much as I do counts towards working out

There are residents here that have purchased their apartments but they usually have dual income households. If I could secure a job, any job, it would change our living situation drastically. Until then we'll just keep making it work!

                Welcome to the group!

We were a one-car family until last year. I totally forgot how convenient it was to have my own vehicle and not have to finagle things around DH's call schedule.

Welcome! I moved to Long Island for two years a number of years ago from California. I know what you mean about culture shock.

Yes, the expense of nyc is the hardest factor of living here. Surviving depends on how much you earn & how much you are willing to sacrifice/compromise. Many residency programs offer subsidized housing, however its still not cheap & many programs are discontinuing it.

I'm divided because I personally couldn't live in the city right now. . . Maybe one day when I'm more comfortable here or if DH ended up getting a job in the city. However, I do agree that the suburbs isn't any safer or better for raising kids, especially after hearing what life is like for the teens where we are! I think my husband and I were both flabbergasted about the amount of high school partying that the parents out here tolerate! I have serious doubts about raising kids in NYC or LI period. There's a part of me that would like to pack it up after residency and try somewhere else.

We're pretty lucky. We live in a fairly small city of around 120k peeps and our house isn't enormous (2500 ft). Our neighborhood is oozing with kids and our three stooges are never inside, no matter the weather. They are playing softball, hide-n-seek, slip-n-slide, chasing lightning bugs, until as late as I'll allow them to hang outside. We live on a dead end so all he kids run amuck in all of our yards.

I think kids' experiences/activity levels are whatever you make them.

Can we come live with you and rent out 500 Square feet? I'm sure it's nicer than our current 500sq feet

I agree that this is true, I was raised in both big cities and small towns/suburbs. My parents encouraged us to explore, learn and enjoy our time outdoors. They also encouraged us to take our time growing up and enjoy being kids. Which I think is something that doesn't get enough attention any more with the competitive schools, clubs and college admissions. Kids need to be kids.

At the end of the day, I'd be happy with a small home in a nice town with good people.

As I pointed out to my husband, we can live anywhere thanks to online shopping options
