Residency was a great period for our family--we had a young son and added two girls, and were very happy, albeit chronically sleep-deprived. I am glad he chose surgery.
My DH is also a neurosurgeon. Yes there are hard parts to the residency and Cheif year SUCKED but his program was very family friendly and tried as hard as possible to stick to the 80 hour rule 99% of the time. He loves what he does and that makes him a happy person and the person I fell in love with. We made it through 5 years of med school, 7 years of residency and 9 months of fellowship and are now 3 weeks into his first "real" job. It can be done, it is done but you both have to be on the same page and on the same communication level to make it work. Welcome and good luck!
