And a very generous public service it is

Welcome! My DH went in to med school wanting to do ortho and is now in a general surgery residency so he didn't stray too far, but there were other specialties on the table between then and now too so don't be surprised if he changes his mind early and often in the process. Becoming a doctor (surgical or otherwise) can be a very rewarding journey but will require more patience, sacrifice, and willingness to close-your-eyes-and-cross-your-fingers from the both of you then you'd ever imagine. I'm glad you found us so early in this process! I got here around MS3 and can't begin to put into words the value of these spouses' perspective. They've saved my sanity more than once.

Flexibility really is the key with the medical crapfest.

My dude had a game plan from day one and never strayed from it, but LOADS of peeps changed their minds. Be prepared for either.

On the other hand, many people go into med school thinking one thing and changing their minds when they get experience (ex pre-med school DH thought ortho, but by the end of first year said he found it boring...)

        Welcome!

ETA: clearly I should have kept reading...you guys got this...

                  Thanks ladies!

I'm not sure how stuck he is on Ortho. We'll see how it goes as things go along. Luckily, his background in the Army has helped us in terms of surviving crappy hours (or deployments!), having no control over our time or where we live, and lots of unknowns. I'm anticipating some of the same over this journey, for better or worse.... :/

Welcome - I agree completely with everyone advising you to encourage him to keep an open mind about specialities. My DH spent three years between undergrad and starting medical school convinced he wanted to to CT surgery. Now, almost halfway through second year and he knows he wants to do anything BUT surgery (and I am very thankful for that - I don't think I'm cut out to be a surgery wife!!). Good luck to you - it's a tough, tough road and not for the faint of heart. I have had some really dark days (chronicled here, more than likely. Not embarrassing at all! ) but I am told it is worth it in the end.

Also...do I spy a yellow lab in your avatar pic? Fellow yellow lab mom here. I love my goofy, shedding, tail wagging, lab-faced goon.

My dh is a surgeon in the army-- he went thru the military med school that's definitely worth a look given your dhs experience with army and prior service. I feel like right now in the world of medicine things are very uncertain. The military scene is a little more stable... But only a little bit.

My dh wanted ortho pretty much through all of med school-- decided to go with ENT at the last minute really. I don't think he's regretted that... Perhaps regretted year 2 of fellowship, but oh well.

Feel free to pm me about usuhs and the military route.
                          Peggy

Aloha from paradise! And the other side of training!

Hi! We're only a year or two ahead of you. My DH just got accepted to an MD program last month and will be starting in August. Glad I found this place. I've been lurking a ton and exchanged some PMs (Wolfpack, I still owe you a response). Everyone is super honest and helpful. You'll like it. Good luck with the testing and app process!
