  • New to iMS from PA

    Hi all,

My boyfriend and I live in the Hershey, PA area. He's a PGY2 in anesthesia. We just moved in together, and I'm looking for some friends and/or support in dealing with some things. Any advice would also be appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!

    Sarah

Welcome!! My DH finished residency 3 years ago. We have quite a few anesthesia spouses on here. Post often - I'm looking forward to getting to know you! Do you work outside the home? What do you do for fun?

          Hi Laurie!

I do work part time, and I'm in nursing school full time as well. No kids yet. I like to run and travel. When he has time, we play tennis and go hiking. It's been rough, because we moved in together about a month ago (dating almost one year) and I've taken up all of the household chores, making lunches, dinners, etc. I know he would help more if he could, but it's a difficult transition. I read a few posts, and it is definitely reassuring to know that it gets better! Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and if anyone is in the Hershey area, I'd love to get together

Welcome! A med school classmate of my husband's just finished her FM residency in Hershey, and they stayed in the area; she and her husband just bought a house in Elizabethtown. My second cousin's husband is in Ortho residency in Hershey, too (I think he's in his last year?) Another classmate is in her last year of anesthesia residency (elsewhere) - she HATED intern year, but loved it once she got to actually do anesthesia in her second year - she's super-busy and always tired, but she's liking what she's doing, and it makes all the difference.

Welcome!! Yea my husband did that as soon as we moved in together (ms3)... It's taken a few years but he's finally starting to take some responsibility!! I think a lot of it is just men wanting to relinquish responsibility. I've... Gotten used to it...

Welcome! I'm in PA too. My husband is an anesthesiologist. Residency is hard but this site is a great source of support.

Well, it's been better since the new year started, because he's doing mostly anesthesia now. We have started doing a weekly date night, which is so helpful in getting through a rough week. The main struggle for me is just feeling isolated in a new city and newly moved in together. I've met a few of his coresidents and their wives on a few occasions, but it's so hard to coordinate their schedules, so I haven't had many opportunities to connect with other girlfriends/SOs. I think I just need to establish a better support network with others who understand what it's like, which I am sure will happen with time .

Welcome! What about playing tennis without him? I met a lot great women that way.

I think it's good to have your own stuff going on.

Building a new friend base is one of the hardest parts of moving. It seems like it usually takes us about two years to get a good, solid group of people we like and can count on, which is frustrating when you're only in one place for four years at a time!

                              Welcome! Happy you found us.

BTW, I work with med students, residents and fellows. Guess what? The single ones still find time to pay their bills, feed themselves and do their laundry.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!
