• Love from Wisconsin!

Hello new friends!

I am so glad to have found this group! Woohoo! After years of defending my relationship to friends and family, I am exhausted. This forum makes me feel as though everything is going to be okay.

Now to properly introduce myself.... I am a Midwestern girl who loves big cities. I met my husband in middle school. We became best friends and started dating post college after we realized that our college relationships were with people who were the dollar store version of the other person. Add in a few drinks, fast forward a few years and now we will be celebrating 4 years of marriage in October.

He's PGY3 and the interview offers for pulm/critical care fellowships are rolling in. The anticipation of our next big move has me stressed. We moved Chicago to NYC to Madison. Residency Match day was a horrible experience for me. This was the program he truly wanted. I left my career in NYC, and I think I want us to go back. I know the match process can't be controlled, but I'm freaking out on the inside about this fellowship ordeal. Starting over isn't easy. I'm trying to figure out how to make starting a family while making career goals a reality. I don't want to keep putting off kids, but how will I be able to handle a big move, new or re-started career, pregnancy and a heap of student loans?

Any advice?

Thanks for the welcome!

I do graphics and marketing at a real estate development company. It's interesting. My "former" life was in fashion. I was on a career path to buyer/planner. Reinventing myself wasn't easy. There are not many places where my career can flourish.

Welcome! We are a year from finding out about fellowship (2 years from starting). I'm not looking forward to a one year move at all.

You've come to the right place. We get it.

Welcome! Fellowship is the true "F" word. Fuck has nothing on that. Your career deserves to get its due attention with this next match as you rank.

I know your gonna like it here. Meenah is Pulmonology/CC. Pull up a chair and stay awhile.

Hi there! I think many people struggle with family planning and career development while their spouses are in training. I know I do, at least! There are many women and men on this board who've made it happen and lived to tell the tale.

What's it like knowing your husband since middle school? I bet you have some good stories of his fantastic middle-school awkwardness!

Welcome to our site!

With kids, there simply isn't a "right time" - you make the best decision possible and let the chips fall where they may.

I'm sorry that you miss your old stomping grounds! We all definitely get it, so post often and let us get to know you.

Welcome! My hubby and I moved to the Midwest for internship/residency and are just gearing up for Fellowship interviews (mid December match). I'm the same boat and sort of opposite of you, it took a VERY long time to actually get settled here. I'm a freelance artist, had to start over from scratch. The thought of starting over next summer is dreadful. So I'm putting all my energy into hoping he 1) thinks his home program is the best fellowship ever 2) dream program close by so I won't feel bad doing long distance. But, we had months of serious talks, now that interviews are about to start coming in I told him I'll be his cheerleader through the process. Until it's time to submit the rank list and we can talk again. I think it's a fair balance.

Looking forward to getting to know you!

Welcome! We've moved a couple of times so far and I've been very fortunate to have been able to continue my career, though it hasn't always been ideal. I suspect we have at least one more move ahead of us too.

Welcome! We were also in NYC for med school, so I understand some of what you're going through on the job front. There used to be a member here who went to school to become a buyer in NYC, as well.
Looking forward to getting to know you better!

I love Madison and you will too! We have several committed Badgers here and our opinion is unanimous. Madison is awesome. We also have a few NYC transplants and many of us who left careers for residency determined to return when training was over. Some of us did and others forged new paths. I found myself someplace I never expected and I'm delighted. Keep an open mind, bloom where you are planted, and post often.
