Welcome to the group! We get that weird shitfest that comes with medical careers. We speak your language around these parts, I promise.

I'm honestly overwhelmed at the response this has gotten! I completely forgot about this and I cannot believe the response. Anyway, I work with interior design specifically color and paint. So if anyone has home improvement/paint/color questions I would be glad to help!!

My husband is pretty torn between GI and colorectal surgery. I think he is leaning more towards medicine because he feels bad for me in regards to the surgical residency lifestyle..especially if we move to another city where I don't know anyone. I told him residency is going to be tough no matter what so he should pick which ever he prefers. If anyone can give insight into residency life vs life as an attending I would appreciate it so much!!

My dad is a colorectal surgeon, and I feel like he has had a really good lifestyle. The general surgery residency is brutal though.

The residencies are probably comparably long or within 1-2 years. Surgery residencies are mostly pretty terrible though there are some non malignant ones out there, allegedly. It's just a lot of call, ours take like Q3 or 4 call for most rotations for basically 5 years (every 3rd or 4th night in the hospital).

                                Welcome to the site!

My DH will be doing his colorectal fellowship this coming academic year. I can't say from experience what attending life is like vs residency life obviously but this

is representative of most of what I've heard. Colorectal is one of the more "family friendly" (if you can really call any surgery specialty that) lifestyles once you get out of training, but of course surgery residency is anything but family friendly. I will say, for us anyway, residency has not been the-worst-thing-ever but I credit a LOT of that attitude to the fact that I spent a good deal of time on these boards pre-residency and the experiences shared by those who had been through it already really helped me set my expectations.
