  • Newbie on the Block Here!

    Hi there!
I'm Angela and I'm about to marry my recently matched MD in June. He will be a PGY-1 resident. We are about to move for residency far away from our families (we didn't intend to, but we all know how the match process is) and I'm terrified! I'm a teacher, and I've been with my MD since before Step 1. We have been together for two years now and I honestly don't know how I got so lucky. He's amazing. Anyway, between looking for a new teaching job, getting ready to move, and planning our wedding, you might say I need some support ha ha. Excited to get to know all of you!

I joined iMSN as a newlywed during PGY1. Eight years and three kids later, I'm still here. You have come to the right place.

Oh my gosh, that's a lot! Welcome! I hope your family isn't giving you grief for moving away? Sometimes they don't understand how the Match can rule our lives so absolutely.

You've definitely come to the right place!

                Welcome!

How long is your partner's residency? Where are you moving to/from if you don't mind sharing? We've got people all over.

Looking forward to getting to know you! What do you teach? Will you have to relicense in a new state? I don't know how teaching works.

I'm so glad to hear a success story! = ) I'm so nervous to move off. Hopefully being able to come here will give me something positive to look for help with.

                        Answer to Questions

Hi all! Thank you for your warm welcome into the community. = )

To answer some questions, no our family isn't giving us any grief about the move, it's more like we are grieving about having to move from the home program. We never expected to have to move this far away. Future Hubby says he didn't think it would matter and that our home program would pick him up. But that fell through. = ( He's pretty distraught, and I am too, but we are just facing the fact that we have to do this and it's what is best for his career right now. Just trusting the Lord that this is where we are supposed to be for now.

As far as where we will be, he is completing his residency at a hospital in New Orleans in Pathology. I have to apply for a teaching license there and it should automatically be approved but my understanding is that public school in LA is much different than here in Alabama. Especially in the metro area. I haven't found a job yet (it's still really early in the hiring season for teachers), but I'm hopeful that the closer the new school year in August gets the better my chances at an offer are. I'm still really scared. I don't want to have to do something else for a year other than teach. It's all I've ever known.

It's been especially hard thinking about leaving my job, especially when this was the year that I was due to get tenure and a raise (a big one). But I want my marriage to SO more than I want my job, so even though it isn't easy it will be worth it, I believe.

Welcome! That's a lot of change all at once, but these ladies here have been through it all and they have lots of great advice to share.

Oh, this part SUCKS. I'm so sorry the match managed to time things so absolutely perfectly to rip that away from you.

Yeah it really does. It would have been so nice for us to be at home. We opened that envelope behind the match curtain on stage and just looked at each other for a full 3 minutes or so. We went out and announced, signed our names to the map, and went back to our seats in shock. I'm not saying this to down the program he matched to, it's just a tough scenario for us right now. Thank you for your kind words!
