• Hi All!

Hi guys! I'm technically just a med girlfriend (not a true med spouse - hopefully one day ) of a PGY1 Internal Med resident, but I found this forum and thought it was amazing. We used to live together, but are now doing long distance while my SO starts residency. Thankfully, both of us aren't too far apart (we're both still in California).

I'm currently a PhD student (molecular physiology), so I understand the grueling hours and time commitment that residency requires. None of my friends are currently dating residents though and I'm learning quickly that while similar in some aspects to dating a med student, it is drastically different in others. So any insight/advice/someone to go through this journey with is definitely welcome

Hi MrsK! Hm what to expect, any advice you have, etc!

So far, I've come to the conclusion (these are off the top of my head. I'll keep adding as I remember):

1) Have zero expectations.
2) Any communication is a good thing - this might be minimal though. Refer to #1 haha
3) Not to take anything personal. It may be the stress/sleep deprivation talking.
4) Just support and be there for them.
5) Make sure to have an independent life outside of your SO.
6) Medicine is a jealous mistress.

I'm surely missing much more. Thoughts anyone?

Sounds about right. Especially about being independent. And chatting here often helps. We get it.

Yeah I'm trying to stay busy. It keeps me distracted for sure. Most of my friends don't quite understand why I would want to be in a relationship with someone who really has very little time for a relationship. It's worth it to me though, I met the love of my life. But I'm starting to learn that dating a physician is a lonely path, even with friends though hah. No one to commiserate with

Welcome! I started my doctoral program when DH began Med school. Good times! Misery does love company. Lol.

All kidding aside, it did help to have my own crazy schedule. We enjoyed the limited free time more.

Glad to "meet" you!
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

Welcome! My DH is an MS4. I started my master's at the beginning of his MS3. It's been nice to have my own thing going, and staying busy definitely helps. During some of his AIs it's been kind of nice to have the place to myself so I can descend into paper writing chaos without having to worry about feeding another human.

Welcome! My husband and I were long distance and couple of times during our journey too: first while we were dating and both in grad school, and later when I was finishing my PhD and he started med school. He's a pgy5 now, I'm faculty, we have 2 kids, and we're trying to figure out what's next. It's not the worst thing ever, but there are certainly parts if it that aren't fun. This is a great group!
