I think I should come out of lurkdome and introduce myself finally I discovered these boards years ago but never registered until just the other day bc well... I just didn't feel the need. But now that my FH is about to start residency, even if I don't yet feel the need, I am sure it will come .
My name is Tiffany. My FH is Carlo. We live in Italy, but I'm American and he's Italian. FH just graduated med school here in Italy last October and will be trying for a residency in surgery next month. Then, over the course of the next 9 months, he will take the USMLE and try matching in the US for 2006. We're undecided about where we want to live, hence the reason for matching in both countries.
Having to move for residency is new issue we are dealing with. If FH places into a residency here (they are not guaranteed in Italy simply bc there are more drs than there are positions available) we will likely have to move 6 hrs away on short notice. Unlike the US where there are 2-3 months btwn match day and the start of residency training, here you must start the day after you get notice of where you've matched. Obviously with my own career to consider, the thought is somewhat... overhwleming? exasperating? demoralizing? I'm still trying to put my finger on how I feel about it.
Anyway I look forward to getting to know you all
