  • Hello again

    Hi everyone,

I first joined here almost three years ago but I haven't been active lately (sorry!). My husband is now at the end of his third year, and about ready to start his OB and Surg rotations, which are, from what I hear, supposed to be the worst ones yet. So far things have been going surprisingly well, but I know I need some support from people who understand what it's like when the only time you "see" your husband is when you're both sleeping in the same bed for 6 hours! I'm a nurse and my schedule is usually very flexible, so I'm sure that helps. Anyway, I look forward to many future discussions!

Welcome back Kate. It helps being a nurse, because at least we can end up having breakfast/lunch/dinner together in the cafeteria.

Hi Kate! My husband is just now wrapping up his general Surgery rotation. It was no cakewalk, but looking back we marvel that this is the hardest our relationship will have it in med school. Now residency -- a frontier yet to be faced.

I shouldered all household responsibilities and swallowed all negativity as best I could for this month. He woke me for a kiss before leaving at 4 to 5 in the morning, and on non-call nights we had dinner together no matter how late after we'd both gotten back from work and exercise routines and the like. He usually collapsed straight into bed by 8:30; by the second week I was comfortable staying up alone till my usual bedtime though this is highly unusual for us. Overall, except for a few instances of soul-numbing rage against the system on his part, it went off without a hitch.

      Good luck!

Welcome back Kate! I found that Surgery and OB were a breeze, my DH was tired but LOVED these rotations, so he wasn't bitter. He is finishing up pediatrics and I couldn't be more thrilled...he has been SOOOO cranky, and absolutely detests peds. Good luck, and I hope it goes smoothly for you!

Kate, Welcome back! The OB & Surgery rotations weren't that bad for my husband, either. He loved OB and if he hadn't gone into EM, he would have chosen that specialty. The long hours were difficult, but I remember him coming home all charged up after each shift. Post often!

              Welcome back!!

DH loved ob/gyn too and his happiness despite being exhausted and treated unbelievably poorly....was slightly disturbing. Surgery was another story.

It's good practice for residency! Feel free to vent about it and post often.

Welcome back, Kate! Look forward to getting to know you!

W - that is a great motto. I bet it served you well during DH's neurosurg residency. Myself, I love to be pleasantly surprised!

Hi Kate! Are you really in Columbus? My DH is MS-3 at OSU. We went through surg and ob in November and December. DH's were especially rough because he ended up in oncology for both rotations, which was particularly difficult--I've heard that it depends on the specific assignment as to how hard it is on the student.

Schedule-wise, it was the longest--he would get up and leave around 4am, come home around 7pm, and would usually fall asleep in his scrubs on the couch immediately upon getting home. The oncall was heavier than the better-schedule things like neuro or IM, but it still wasn't that bad.

I guess that you'll just have to expect that he won't be around much, and when he is, he'll be asleep--but we got through it alright and I'm pretty demanding as far as getting attention!

Hope that wasn't a Debbie Downer post!
