  • Aack! An early Move!?!

So DH is just about to finish his first year at TUCOM. He really is into OMM and originally wanted to find an osteopathic orthopedic surgery residency. Well, after talking to others he finds out there are only 3 of these in the country. Could this really be?

Anyways, they are in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida. Right away we knew Florida wasn't an option right. (Neither of us can deal with the humidity. We had that nice surprise when we went on our Carribean honeymoon.) So that leaves East Lansing or Philadelphia. To be honest I picture snow when I hear East Lansing and a big city (with snow) when I picture Phili. Don't get me wrong I like snow - love to look at it, go visit it. Not too keen on shoveling it. What can I say? I am hecka NorCal. 8) So any input on these two areas (housing, education (I'm a science teacher), crime, entertainment) would be appreciated.

So now DH has the idea that he should do his rotations (at least the 4th year electives, and possible his general surgery) at one of these schools so that he can develop a rapport with the hospital rather than just introduce himself at match. (Thus the title - we'd have to move after next year.) First off, will this even help him match?

I don't know those area but he probably doesn't need to do his whole 4th year at these schools. If he can fit it into his schedule I would recommend an away rotation at each in the specialty he's looking for. Some schools do prefer applicants that have rotated there because they know more about them then a one day interview however its not a guarantee.

Good luck - 4th year and the match are great in some ways and very stressful in others.
Wife to NSG out of training, mom to 2, 10 & 8, and a beagle with wings.

First, welcome to the site, it is a great place to get information and shoulders to lean on!

Second, my DW, was/is still crazy about OMT/OMM. She graduated from, what used to be OSU-COM(now it is something else..OSU-ABC-U-OWE-US or something). Anyway, it is great that your husband wants to maintain the O part of the DO.

Why wouldn't your husband want to do a residency at an allopathic program and then bring his skills as a DO, trained in OMM to their benefit?
Just curious, I wouldn't want your family to be waiting around at match time hoping for one-of-three, when there are many other spots if you look beyond the Osteopathic only spots. Just my, two cents.

      Welcome again!
