    You cannot blame yourself or worry like that for this guy. If you find that he does become overly depressed urge him to seek medical attention, but you cannot stay in the relationship because you are afraid he will become suicidal. Yikes.

    Do it in person. That's the best way. If you can't do it in person (honestly you should be able to, but I know that was a problem anyway), do it over the phone.

    Some of the ladies here have broken up with their medical spouses and later found their way back to them, so you never know what will happen. That said, you clearly aren't getting what you need out of this relationship. Good luck with the break up and good luck on Step II.
