  • Newly wedded to a carribean medical student

Hi everyone! I'm emily and new around here. My husband and I just got married this new years. We've been friends for a long time since we met while in college at Colorado State. He then left for his home state minnesota and I left for my home state, Texas. He then started medical school in teh carribean and I continued my life back home. I have a son from a previous relationship who will be turning three at the end of the month. Lucas has one month left of basic science and then its home to work for a while and to try to pass his Step 1!!! (Yes to be clear for two years he has lived over there and I've lived waaaaay over here). This is an amazing and fun and scary and hard time in our lives. I'm hoping to find some friends who know what I'm going through!

Welcome! I'm sure you will find some people to share the med school experience. We have a lot of new members in that phase. I also think we have some past Caribbean med school folks, but I can't remember who. I look forward to getting to know you. Post often!

        where we will be living

We have no idea!! He meets with the clinical rep tomorrow to suggest choices. I have no idea where we will go, but I know where we can't go. Looks like nothing in California or Texas. We had planned on Atlanta, but something changed I guess and clinical tuition went way up so his school isn't suggesting them anymore. I guess we'll see after he passes Step 1! I am hoping to find a good city that I could finish my masters in English at. I may need to wait till he's working on his residency though. I am so excited to have found this website, knowing that so many spouses get together to sahre this time of their lives and beyond is so exciting. No one around me knows what this is like, and I'm only just learning! Thanks for teh support!

You sound very positive. I think that it is easy for me to get down while I put my career on hold for the whims of the medical education system. Good Luck!

            career on hold

I think about my "career" sometimes. I'm halfway through a masters program, but I"m in english and honestly don't want to teach. I think everyone has different callings and routes and ideal jobs. I've always dreamed of being a mommy and wife. So I guess I'm positive because I see the light at the end of my tunnel! Freedom to get to stay home and be barefoot in the kitchen. I know its the uncool professional choice these days, but I don't deal with criticism in the workplace well. I've worked for a Downtown professional Firm and I hated being stuck under flourescent lights. I think I would be excited for him to be pursuing any career that would enable freedom from that. I am terrified of the next few years though, trying to stay afloat financially while he works. We want another baby but when? Its a lot of stress knowing I'm the one paying rent for a while.
