  • Just found you all!!

Hi!!! It's 4 in the morning and I have just found your group. What a bonus!!

I hope you don't mind this venting but I just had to have someone to talk to as I have just had some bad news today and I can't stop crying and seriously need to talk to someone who understands.

I have 2 sleeping kids in my bed and dh is currently at work doing an operation at this ridiculous time in the morning. He is a second year registrar in oral and maxillofacial surgery and we still have 3 years to go. Up till today it was 2 years to go but the RACDS here in Australia have decided in their wisdom not to accredit him and two other of the registrars in dh's stage of the course this past year of training.

I am so angry as it has come about because of the politics and misadvice of his state supervisors and hence they have added in total 2 extra years of his course. It has been 13 years now of study and we should have finished at 14 years in the old system. Because of the politicking between states my dh has been caught in the middle of two systems and today we found out the Australian RACDS have added this extra year.

We have five children and have been rotated for the past four years around various hospitals - all with a big commute and big expectations on times that dh is expected to work = 70-80 hours a week and every 2nd weekend on call. Our children are 2-7 yrs old and I am basically a sole parent. Dh has just been told this week that he is expected to do two lectures at the university per week as well - plus he has to write a thesis as well before he finishes.

What angers me is that the powers that be just keep piling the work up on dh and expect him to do all these things whereas none of them had to do this type of regimen when they went through. The revised training course is getting to the ridiculous stage where dh virtually has no life for 7 years. I am just so sick of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We can't move to a smaller town because we are stuck here in the city with the training course and the goal posts for this course just keep on moving. Each year we get told a different thing and we never know where we are going to be next year. This coming year we are moving to a remote city as our next rotation and I am in the middle of packing the house as well. The kids are going to have to change schools for 1 year and then we have to do the move all over again. It is just so frustrating and I am just so angry that we have been put through 2 hellish years that are not even accredited!

I am so so sorry to hit you all with this on my first post, but I (and dh) can't complain because of the politics of the whole situation and I'm feeling so miserable tonight.

Oh - how awful! To have the end moved out & away from you! You've clearly got your plate terribly full, and I'm so glad you've found us. We have another recent poster to the board who is also an Aussie ... hopefully you two are somewhere near each other?? Or may at least be able to commiserate on a more local level.

Welcome. Post often. NEVER apologize for dumping. We understand as few others in the world can.

I do hope someone comes to their senses in your situation.

Hello and welcome!!! I'm only newish here too - I am the Other Australian of whom Jesher spoke. I didn't think I'd find anyone else from these parts on the boards, but it's great to see you here!

It sounds like you're having a seriously tough time of it. DH experienced some similar things as an overseas doctor trying to get accreditation and then fellowship during the time of the whole "Dr Death" scandal. Oh, watch those goalpoasts move! However, if it's paper-pushers who are giving you a hard time, then you may be able to get around them. Can you go above the individual(s) in question? There seem to be a lot of people around who just like to complicate things and feel important, but sometimes they can be bypassed. Is there someone at the hospital with influence who likes your DH?

I'm not sure whereabouts in Australia you are, but feel free to PM me if you like. This board is the best I've even been on - full of intelligent conversation, supportive people, and best of all, complete understanding of all the crappy things that medical spouses have to put up with! Vent away...

First and foremost welcome aboard! You are sooooo in need of a huge hug and a sanity boost...I can't imagine the toll of trying to "solo" parent 5 kids between 2-7, and having all the unexpected drama of your poor DH being screwed over by New Rules! :thud:

Do not apologize for venting for that IS the expected norm...c'mon if you aren't venting your not married to someone in the medical profession!!!

Just remeber "we are here for you!"

Wow, thanks alot girls. I'm so sorry I had such a big blow the other night... In light of the day and not being so tired I wouldn't normally do something like that. I had just found out on that morning from dh of the ruling that the National body had made and I was pretty upset as you can imagine. It's really complicated to explain what has happened so I won't go into detail. There are two other doctors who have been affected in this way so we are not the only ones - just our state trainees.

Anyway I just wanted to thank you for your support and will have a look around the boards soon.

                  Wendy
