  •  My Introduction

Hi everyone, I just joined up and thought I should introduce myself. My name is Tiffany and I am married to a 3rd year medical student who is currently traveling around doing his rotations. We have a 2 year old son, another on the way and two pound pups who are pretty sure that they are my children too. While my husband is off on his rotations, I spend my time working as a lawyer, trying to be a great mom to our son and attempting to keep my sanity. I'm looking forward to talking with you all.

    Tiffany,

Welcome, we are glad to have you here! I'm Kelly, the wife of a second year general surgery resident at the U. of Minnesota. Where are you guys located?

It must be challenging to manage everything while your husband is away on rotations. Hopefully, you will find support and kindred souls here. I've been a member since last Spring and have found this board to be an amazing resource. Coincidentally, I also have a 21 month old and practice law! I look forward to chatting with you on the boards!

      Kelly,

Nice to meet you also. I am a kindred Midwest spirit located in Iowa. My husband is in Kansas City right now where I am originally from. What kind of law do you practice? I am a trial lawyer and focus mainly on employment discrimination. Interestingly enough, I hate conflict...go figure.

Hi Tiffany! Welcome to the board.

My name is Robin and my husband is a 4th year med. student starting residency interviewing. Actually, he has an interview at Univ. of Iowa coming up. Who knows, we may end up out your direction. Currently we are in Phoenix and enjoying the cooler weather (now!)

I have 4 boys ranging from 10 to 2 years of age. I also work at home as a medical transcriptionist and I stay pretty busy.

It must be difficult having your husband off on rotations. My husband was gone for a couple of months in August and September and it about drove me crazy. It was a defining moment for us as it drove him crazy too and he changed his specialty from surgery to anesthesiology to have a better family lifestyle.

I am glad you met Kelly. She was the first person I thought of when I read your intro. It sounds like you will have a lot in common with many of us here. Hope to get to know you better and, again, WELCOME!

        Robin

          Tiffany,

That is so funny, I am a COWARD when it comes to conflict and tend to avoid an argument at any cost! I'm only two years out of law school and am still recoiling from the damage to my psyche.

However, I love to research and write and I find that many types of law are compatible with being a working mom. I work 25-30 hours a week writing opinions for a judge. This is a fabulous job which allows me to work from occasionally. (Plus I don't have to represent sleazy clients or get yelled at by angry judges!)

Will you have to obtain a new license when your hubby accepts a residency (a serious pain!) or do you all plan to stay in Iowa? By the way, has your husband decided on a specialty? Ah, the logistics of a medical marriage!

          Kelly

Hey There Tiffany--I have been hit and miss for awhile

I am Jason and currently make a living working for the doughboy who most recently was sold to General Mills. I am working in logisitics right now and waiting for my partner to complete residency--oh ya my partner Dan is in his second year of residency at a hospital here in MNPLS. I will be heading back for my masters once he is done and we are finally settled--I am thinking mental health--as God knows I could use it-hehe

            Welcome to the group.

              Hi Tiffany,

My fiance is a fourth year medical student in AZ. Right now, we are going through the whole residency/match thing. As for me, I have been in tech sales for 2 years. However, I just got a gig in television advertising sales at Telemundo. It's really fun! In college, I was also considering a career in law and had a chance to see Washington, DC while interning at the DOJ.

              Welcome to the group!

                Hi Robin, Jason and Rachel,

Nice to meet all of you also.

Robin: Iowa is a pretty nice place to live...MIdwest slowness, a decent cost of living and low crime. I would, though, not suggest moving here in the winter, they are terrible. I can't imagine how you managed for a couple months by yourself with 4 children. Gregg has only been gone for a week and it is already enough for me. I don't know how I am going to survive the next year and 1/2. He hopes to spend much of his 4th year in Kansas City and I told him tonight that I plan on selling the house and moving there too. Frankly, he hates this more than me. I went to visit him this weekend and he was beside himself with glee when we arrived. He also wants to find a family friendly specialty if at all possible. Any suggestions?

Kelly: The research/writing idea sounds wonderful. How do you manage to establish clientele? I would love to do something like that but can't quit my job until I have a equal source of income coming in because of our HUGE school loans. Since I have been practicing for over 5 years I won't have to take the bar again in any state that has reciprocity. That, of course, is one of my requirements for his residency choice as I have had to take it in 3 states thus far and won't take a 4th bar exam. I am very interested in the research/writing idea...it sounds like a great way to keep working and be able to plan some of my own hours. Tell me more!

Jason: So you are a Midwesterner also (at least right now). Let me know when you have that Master's in mental health...I'm sure I will also need assistance after dealng with this medical school/residency path for a few more months/years.

Rachel: I bet interning at the DOJ was quite interesting. Good luck to your fiance in the match process. I hope everything works out exactly like you hope.

Nice to meet all of you again. This seems like a great friendly and diverse place. I look forward to talking to everyone more.

                Tiffany

                  Hi & Welcome Tiffany!

Sounds like you have a full house there! I know how much trouble (in the best way possible, of course!) pound pups can be - they are so very needy but quite adorable! It's great to have you join us - I am newly married to a 3rd year gen surgery resident (which makes me think of your question re: family friendly specialties. . .stay very, very far away from surgery. . .i'm thinking family med, peds, radiology. . .these other gals will know!) No kids - just a codependent pound pup, a cat and a kitten on the way! I'm trying to find a job and finish my master's thesis in media studies....looking forward to chatting with you!!

                    Hi Tiffany-

Glad to have you! I'm Wendy, spouse of Dave, who is a 3rd year student. I'm learning lots about the whole match process from these girls that are just a year ahead of me. We are living in Michigan after moving form Kirksville, MO. I've made MANY trips to Kansas City & really love the city.

No kids yet, but we do have a very needy little dog that seem to be glued to me here lately. Don't really know what's up with that!

                          Welcome Tiffany!

My name is Crystal, wife of Matt, an Internal Medicine Intern (yep he is a brand spanking new doc.). In June Matt will start his residency in Anesthesia. We are expecting our first child, a girl, in January (only 2 more months to go!).

I usually lurk about on the board, only because I have a short time to read and reply (had some time today!). What else? ALL of the people on this board are supportive and very friendly.

Hi Tiffany- Nice that you found this place. I am another Jennifer (there are a few here). You will find me lurking most of the time here because I am a new mom. Our 7 week old takes up most of my time in some way or another ( I am trying to sneak in a few minutes before she wakes up).

My husband is in his 2nd year of a 3 year neonatology fellowship. We are in the midwest as well, just farther east in Ohio.

                            Enjoy your time here!

To all those I haven't responded to...thanks for the welcome. November was a bit crazy without my husband in town and I forgot my password to log in. So, nice to meet all of you and look forward to chatting with everyone on all sorts of subjects.
